About the Item

Shakudo is the use of mixed metal alloys and was originally used in Japanese armor and swords. Artisans would sometimes remove the Shakudo plaques from the armor and incorporate it into jewelry or art. It has become very collectible and quite unusual. This incredible mixed metals fob necklace from the Victorian era (ca1880) is an outstanding example of the Shakudo craft! The necklace is a compilation piece, consisting of a 3-dimensional dragon fob (ca1900) that hangs from two different strands of Shakudo link chains. The silver and 14kt yellow gold fob depicts an exotic Japanese dragon, complete with a serpentine body that weaves and curls into a knot-like design. The detail is incredibly fine, including a textured surface to represent scales, expressive facial features with open eyes, individual teeth, and a beard and mustache. The sides of the fob and some of the dragon details are made of yellow gold, while the base and dragon itself are made of silver. The necklace is formed by two separate but complimentary strands of Shakudo chain. One consists of elongated plaque links with a mixed metals grape leaf motif on each side. The other strand of chain has a row of 3-dimensional Japanese lanterns, also with a mixed metals design with a raised floral motif atop the textured surface. A gold push clasp can be found near the back of the piece, also embellished with a feminine floral pattern. The precise detail that forms the hand wrought dragon fob is simply incredible, and the combination of two unique Shakudo chains together makes a fabulous statement when worn. This necklace is simply exceptional and would be perfect for any Shakudo collector! The dragon fob stands 5/8" tall, and measures 3/4" long and 5/8" wide at the base. It hangs 1 1/2" long including the chain extension. The overall length of the chain is 29" from end to end. Each long plaque link measures 1 1/4" long, and the lantern links measure 3/8" long.

Wear consistent with age and use. The overall condition of the necklace is very good. There is some noticeable wear to the mixed metals floral motif on the Shakudo link chain. The lantern links and fob are in excellent condition and display only minimal surface wear.
