16mm Tahitian Pearl "Cinch" Pendant in Rose Gold with Sapphire Bead Chain

About the Item

This gorgeous, glossy blue-black-silver-pink baroque Tahitian pearl is topped with an old chain cincher, cleverly converted to a bale by Eytan Brandes. This cincher would have been part of a long guard chain or muff chain. Inside the cincher was a block of cork that created the tension needed to hold the cincher in place. Fast forward a hundred years and the cork has decomposed, and so have the four tiny seed pearls set in a line on the cincher's front. Eytan replaced the pearls with dark blue sapphires, cleaned out the inside of the cincher (which will cinch no more) and added a round wire loop to the top to create a cool and unique bale. The pearl is outstanding -- just over 16mm, with amazing color, high, thick luster, and, in its middle regions, silky smooth skin. Its neck is interestingly puckered (almost like it's being CINCHED!), and its bottom has a gorgeous circle pattern. There's a little cluster of dents among the circles -- not unsightly but still a flaw -- and they're oriented to the side. The pearl is from our trusted supplier, Seven Seas Pearls, with offices in Germany, Tokyo and Los Angeles. Seven Seas deals only with saltwater pearls (i.e., Akoya, South Sea and Tahitian), so we always know we're getting the real thing -- no freshwater, no creepy treatments, and nothing from China. Included with the pendant is a bead necklace we made specifically to match. It's a 19" strand of dark and light blue sapphire beads (with some gorgeous light brown andalusite mixed in), finished with a 14 karat rose gold lobster clasp.* The inside of the pendant's top loop measures just over 5.2mm, so the sapphire necklace can easily be removed for mixing and matching. Replacements made: The cincher was originally set with seed pearls. We replaced them with 1mm faceted natural (heat-only) dark blue sapphires. Polished. Additions or alterations made to the original: The "cincher" doo-dad has been modified from its original use to convert it to a bale, including the addition of a top loop, which is fashioned from recycled gold wire. The pearl and bead necklace are new.
