About the Item

A rare and seldom seen Roman Republican silver "denarius" from 46 BC featuring an Egyptian Sphinx is displayed in an exquisitely granulated Steven Battelle designed setting created by one of our master goldsmiths. The Romans were fascinated by the Egyptian monuments and civilization and chose to display the Sphinx on this particular coin. The other side of the coin displays the head of Sibyl Herophile facing right, hair elaborately decorated with jewels and tied in bands. Sibyl Herophile is the Oracle of Erythaea, one of the oracles of Apollo. She was born with a beautiful voice that managed to attract Apollo, and as a result, he made her one of his oracles and blessed her with the power of prophecy. She revealed prophecies in the form of word puzzles. This pendant is sent with a laminated lifetime coin certificate of authenticity. The 18K woven wheat chain shown is not included, but can be ordered additionally. We discount our chains 20% when ordered with a pendant. An EXTREMELY rare, historic and very clear image of the Sphinx!
