About the Item

Five carnelian amulets in the form of larva or grubs, inter-spaced with fourteen carnelian beads, both round and cylindrical, alternating with sixteen large round collared spherical gold beads. Two more spheres form beading tips and there is an attached hook and eye clasp. The stone pieces are said to be from the Tairona people of Colombia, South America. They have been made entirely without the use of metal tools by the use of abrasives, drills and string saws. The significance of the grubs for the ancient Tairona people is unknown. One theory is that it is the larval form of the bot fly which infests Howler monkeys. Howler monkeys were a food source for the peoples of the Amazon, but what relationship this has to the use of the grub form in the jewelry is an open question. There must have been a deep significance to the use of this form, but at present it remains a mystery. The larva must have played a role in an important myth which is unknown to us. Even without the specific knowledge of their meaning, the larva forms are vigorous and powerful and have a strong abstract and formal presence. The red jasper centerpiece of this necklace is 4.6 cm in height. It is 2.05 cm wide and 2.8 cm back to front. It is drilled about half way down and two thirds to the back for suspension. The drill hole is 5 mm and tapers from each side to meet in the middle. The back is flat and slightly rounded to comfortably rest against the body. The next grub up (on the right side of the necklace proper) has beautiful white and orange patterning and is 2.9 cm in height, 9.2 mm wide and 1.9 cm from back to front. It has a drill hole of 3 mm diameter that tapers to the center. The next grub up is also beautifully marked with orange and white layers and is 2.13 cm in height, 1 cm in width and 1.5 cm from back to front. The grub to the other side of the center has a slightly translucent darker orange color and two bulging “eyes.” It is 2.5 cm in height and 1.2 cm wide, and 1.63 cm from back to front. It is drilled similarly to the others with a 4 mm diameter drill hole. The next grub is also orange and white with the same bifurcation on the head as the other three orange and white pieces. It is 2.45 cm in height and 9.5 mm wide. It is 1.55 cm from back to front and has a drill hole of 4.5 mm. The round carnelian beads are 1.3 cm in diameter and 1.2 cm in length, being slightly flattened spheres. The cylindrical beads are 9 mm in diameter and 3.1 cm in length. The next smallest sized cylinders are 9 mm and 10 mm in diameter and 2.8 cm and 2.45 cm in length. They all have 4 mm drill holes. The smallest pair of cylinders are 8.5 mm in diameter and 1.6 cm and 1.3 cm in length. The latter is slightly tapered, the rest are all straight sided. There are two tapered barrel shaped beads at the back: one is 1.05 cm in diameter and 1.1 cm in length and the other is 8 mm in diameter, 9 mm in length with a creamy white color. The round gold beads are 1.45 cm in diameter and are collared, making them 1.5 cm in length. The gold clasp is a hook and eye and beading tips, the hook made from a strip of gold with the end rolled up at the end of the hook. It attaches to an eye with the attachment circle at right angles to the other circle which attaches to the beading tips. The beading tips are spheres with a strap of flattened wire attached to the bordered rim on a raised disc to either side of the openings. This hides the knots at the end of the cord on which the beads are strung. The beading tips continue the look of the spherical beads and are also incorporated into the design of the clasp. The necklace is 23 inches (57.5 cm) in length. The necklace weighs 153.6 grams.
