About the Item
Symbolic and steeped in sentiment, this antique mourning pendant (dated 1848) features a beautiful snake coiled protectively around a luminous pearl, crafted in warm 12k gold and rich black enamel. The snake—a powerful symbol of eternity, protection, and the cyclical nature of life—was a cherished motif in Victorian mourning jewelry, offering comfort through its deeply rooted symbolism.
The reverse of the pendant bears a poignant hand-engraved dedication:
“E.C. Lewis Died May 3, 1848”
—lending a touching personal history to this already emotionally resonant piece.
Measuring approximately 1 inch from the top of the bail to the bottom by 0.5 inches wide, and weighing 2.63 grams, the pendant is delicate in scale but rich in meaning. The gold has been verified via XRF and jeweler’s acid testing to confirm 12k purity. It is in good condition; however, there has been some cold enamel restoration.
