Antique Victorian Gold Micro Mosaic Cross Pendant C 1860
About the Item
An exquisite C 1860 Italian micromosaic cross pendant, possibly commissioned in the Papal workshops and shaped in the form of the Chi-Rho - a symbol of Christ. The center is embellished with a round micromosaic plaque depicting a winged cherub—a divine guardian figure in Christian tradition. There is a circular compartment for the hair at the back, but it's glass is missing. The cross features vibrant white, blue, and red tesserae, all in excellent condition with no losses. Intricate Etruscan-style gold wirework and delicate granulation frame the piece, showcasing the superior craftsmanship of Grand Tour-era Italian micromosaics. A rare, large in size - 8.3 x 4cm, which makes it striking yet wearable piece, this is a highly collectible devotional item in a great wearable condition.
