Egyptian Revival 800 Silver Enamel Figurative Pendant with Malachite

About the Item

This is an interesting Egyptian Revival Figurative Pendant. Standing atop a building covered with hieroglyphs, an Egyptian male stands erect holding a staff in one hand and an Ankh in the other. There is a doorway or passage with a palm tree pictured on the other side. The piece is made out of 800 silver and has colorful enamel in the recesses of the building and figure. It is rendered in great detail. At the bottom is a polished half circle of Malachite, most likely representing the sun. At the top is a bail for hanging on a chain to be used as a pendant. This wonderful piece stands 3 7/8" from the top of the bail to the end of the malachite and is 1" wide. It is marked 800 and is in very good condition with some small loss to the enamel. It weighs 16 grams and was made during the 1920 Egyptian Revival Period. The Egyptian Revival style flourished in the 1920's and coincided with the discovery of King Tutankhamen's tomb. The winged scarab was a symbol in ancient Egyptian cultures representing good luck. The scarab is also the symbol of the god Khepera, who rolled the ball of the sun across the sky to "rebirth" every morning, represented resurrection and life. The Ankh represents the concept of eternal life.

Egyptian Revival Brown Faience Scarab Pendant with 14K Gold Mount
Located in Venice, CA
During the early 19th century, the discoveries of ancient archaeological finds influenced and introduced what is referred to as "Egyptian Revival Jewelry." The first Egyptian Revival period began around the 1820’s, inspired by the unearthing of ancient Egyptian ruins during that time. Images such as the scarab beetle, sphinxes, pharaohs, and hieroglyphics became popular motifs in fashion. Pieces were often crafted using a material known as Egyptian Paste or "faience", which is the oldest form of non-clay glazed ceramic and usually found in a range of blue and green colors.  In the 1920’s, there was another unearthing of treasures, making the trend popular once again. This scarab pendant is from that era—the third Egyptian Revival period. The scarab is a brown colored faience bead with tan overtones in its recesses that delineate the shape of the beetle. There are hieroglyphics on the back of the scarab. At the bottom of the scarab is a round 14k gold ball that extends as a wire through the bead and forms a bale at the top. The pendant measures 1 “ from the bottom of the ball to the top of the bale. The scarab measures 11/16” x 1/2”. The bale measures 5 mm. The piece weighs 2.55 grams. The gold is unmarked and acid tests as 14k. The scarab is in excellent condition for its age and is ready to hang on a chain of your choice. We have other sizes and colors of scarab jewelry...

14K Gold Poseidon Signature Classical Revival Medallion Pendant
Located in Venice, CA
Created as part of our signature collection, this 14k gold intaglio medallion depicts Poseidon, god of the sea, riding two hippocampi across turbulent ocean waves. The oval medallion hangs horizontally from an oversized bail, and the texture of the waves catches the light and gives the pendant an added sparkle. The medallion is pictured here on our Signature Handmade Dog Bone Link Chain. Using a rare bronze intaglio from the late 1700’s, we created a mold and cast the pendant in gold. We hand-carved depth into the mold so that the details would pop on the contemporary medallion as beautifully as they do on the original antique intaglio, and then lovingly added a gentle patina by hand to the finished piece. The intaglio used as a mold for this medallion is attributed to the James Tassie workshop, circa the late 18th century. Born in 1735, Tassie was a Scottish stonemason who invented a glassy white paste perfect for replicating gemstones. Tassie was commissioned across Europe, first by Catherine the Great of Russia, then by the Wedgwood factory, to create imitation gemstones and elaborately carved intaglios. In 1773, most of the infamous blue and white cameos in the Wedgwood catalogue were cast from molds made by Tassie. The artist left behind a collection of over 15,800 intricate pieces of artwork. Many of Tassie’s intaglios were cast in glass-paste or plaster, which could eventually break. However, some were cast into bronze—which have survived for centuries. These pieces are rare treasures that capture Tassie’s incredible skill. We love the Classical Revival imagery found in James Tassie’s work, which often depicts scenes from Greek and Roman mythology. These myths speak to human nature in a way that makes it just as evocative today as it was in the Classical Revival era that James Tassie worked within. The beauty of the images and timelessness of the stories were what drew us to these intaglios and inspired us to revive the centuries-old art for contemporary jewelry. Just as Tassie revived these ancient images, we are reviving Tassie’s work. Tradition is part of what makes the art of jewelry so meaningful. The Poseidon medallion...
