About the Item
This exquisite 18Kt Gold pendant houses a Byzantine Tremissis from the 5th century AD, featuring the Emperor Anastasius I. On the front, we see his helmeted and cuirassed bust facing forward, holding a spear and shield, symbolizing his military strength and leadership.
Anastasius I, who reigned from 491 to 518 AD, is credited with restoring stability to the Eastern Roman Empire, particularly after the chaotic reigns of his predecessors. His reign marked a period of fiscal reform, administrative restructuring, and efforts to strengthen the empire's borders, laying the foundation for future successes in the Byzantine Empire.
Anastasius was known for his financial acumen, implementing a new gold coinage system that reduced inflation and stabilized the economy. His efforts to reorganize the military and fortify the empire's frontiers, especially in the Balkans, were pivotal in ensuring the defense of the eastern territories against barbarian invasions.
One of the key aspects of his reign was his religious policy. Although a Monophysite himself, Anastasius sought to maintain peace within the empire by navigating the theological tensions between the Orthodox and Monophysite factions, avoiding major religious conflicts during his rule.
On the reverse of the coin, Victory is depicted advancing to the right, her head turned, holding a wreath in her right hand and a globe surmounted by a cross (globus cruciger) in her left. This imagery symbolizes divine favor, military triumph, and the emperor’s role as the defender of both empire and faith.
Anastasius's legacy is often seen through his contributions to the administration and economy of the Byzantine Empire. Though not marked by large military conquests, his reign helped solidify the foundations of what would become a thriving Byzantine Empire for centuries to come. His death in 518 saw the rise of Justin I, who continued many of his reforms, ensuring the continuity of Anastasius's policies and strategies for the empire's longevity.
