Imperial Russian Monogram of Grand Duke Nikolai Mikhailovich by Alfred Thieleman

About the Item

Another unique item from our collection is the Imperial Enamel Silver Monogram of Grand Duke Nicholas Mikhailovich, crafted in Imperial Russia by master Alfred Thielemann. The pendant measures 43 mm (1.7 in). The weight is 12 grams. Noteworthy are the marks on the pendant's hanging ring and on the pendant itself on the front side of the wreath: “α” alpha, signifying inspection by the St. Petersburg Assay Office, "88", and the woman's head in a kokoshnik and initials "AT" - the master's mark, a unique feature that will pique your curiosity. AT—Alfred Thielemann was an active jeweler for Faberge between 1880 and 1910. He produced small trinkets, miniature egg pendants, and other jewelry for the Faberge company. This pendant is not just a piece of jewelry; it's a piece of history, a tangible connection to the rich heritage of Russian Imperial craftsmanship that will make you feel like you are a part of something significant. The pendant is in excellent vintage condition, a testament to its quality and durability. You can be confident that this piece will continue to enchant for years. Comes in its original antique Faberge wooden box. A little bit of history and interesting historical facts: Monograms, as marks of distinction and symbols of royal and noble titles, began to be used at the Russian Imperial Court in the second half of the 18th century, during the reign of Catherine the Great. Catherine the Great played a key role in introducing monograms as distinguishing marks for courtiers. A monogram was a graphic composition consisting of intertwined initials—often of the empress and her family members, as well as courtiers and high-ranking individuals. A monogram was not just a decorative element but rather a symbol of dignity and privilege. It represented a personal affiliation with the royal family or an important title. Monograms were usually made in the form of brooches or pendants. The brooches were worn on clothing, most often on corsages or bows. The monogram could be made of gold or silver and decorated with gemstones or enamel. It was often attached to the clothing, especially on the left side of the chest, symbolizing closeness to the heart. In some images, it can be seen that monograms were also worn on bows with blue ribbons, recalling the connection to the imperial house. Monograms were typically crowned with a stylized imperial crown, which emphasized the high status of the owner. One of the features of monograms, especially among high-ranking courtiers, was the double monogram. These were combinations of two intertwined initials, symbolizing the union of two individuals or two important figures of power. Monograms were an important attribute and status symbol, signifying a person's position in society and their closeness to the court. Over time, they became increasingly popular among the nobility, as well as among the royal families of Europe. In our collection, we have the monogram of Grand Duke Nicholas Mikhailovich Romanov (1859–1919). Nicholas Mikhailovich was a Russian historian, publicist, and philanthropist, a representative of the Romanov dynasty. He was the grandson of Emperor Nicholas I and the elder son of Grand Duke Michael Nikolaevich. Nicholas Mikhailovich was deeply involved in history and left a significant legacy. He specialized in the history of Emperor Alexander I's reign and the Napoleonic era. His works include studies on genealogy and biographies of Russian monarchs. Unlike many members of the imperial family, he held liberal views. He advocated for reforms and condemned the reactionary policies of the tsarist regime. He was critical of Grigori Rasputin and denounced Emperor Nicholas II for his weakness and indecisiveness. After the October Revolution of 1917, he did not leave Russia, remaining in Saint Petersburg (Petrograd). In 1918, he was arrested by the Bolsheviks and held in the Peter and Paul Fortress. On January 9, 1919, along with other grand dukes—Georgy Mikhailovich, Dmitry Konstantinovich, and Pavel Alexandrovich—he was executed by order of the Soviet government. Nicholas Mikhailovich was an erudite man dedicated to science and enlightenment. His historical works remain valuable sources for researchers of the Romanov dynasty and the Russian Empire.
