Louis Comfort Tiffany Moonstone and Sapphire Pendant Necklace, Tiffany & Co.

About the Item

Designed and fully hand created by Louis Comfort Tiffany and his jewelry studio between approximately 1910 and 1920, this moonstone, sapphire and platinum pendant hangs from a later sapphire chain. The pendant is designed as an elongated teardrop form centering a flexibly-set oval cabochon moonstone with foliate engraved edges, within a shaped frame of circular-cut sapphires accented by scrolling wirework and beads, suspended from a later delicate double 18K white gold chain of spectacle-set circular-cut sapphires. A rare work from the studio of Tiffany & Co.'s foremost artist, this Louis Comfort Tiffany jewel transforms gemstones into ethereal, painterly compositions of texture, light and color. Product Details: Item #: N-21327 Artist: Louis Comfort Tiffany for Tiffany & Co. Country: United States Circa: 1910-1920 Dimensions: pendant: 2.00" length x 1.00" width. chain: 20.50" length Materials: Pendant: 1 oval cabochon moonstone; 33 round-cut sapphires (approximate total weight 3.15 carats); Platinum; Chain: 139 round-cut sapphires (approximate total weight 9.73 carats); 18K white gold. Signed: TIFFANY&CO Literature: For images of Louis Comfort Tiffany's moonstone and sapphire jewelry of this period, see Louis Comfort Tiffany at Tiffany & Co., by John Loring, pp.72-75, and The Jewelry and Enamels of Louis Comfort Tiffany, by Janet Zapata, pp. 109 and 116. Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: Louis Comfort Tiffany's jewelry was fully crafted by hand, based on original design sketches. Over the life of the department under Louis' tenure, it was headed by women, and women occupied many essential roles, selected not only for their skills but what Louis considered their natural aptitudes - deft hands suited to intricate work and eyes that could perceive more shades of his preferred colors, blue and green. While many of Louis' designs looked to nature or historical forms for inspiration, these compositions of billowy blue-gray moonstones in soft, sloping shapes, contrasted with metallic blue, sparkling sapphires, set juxtaposed within minimalist platinum frames, are original and unmistakable as his work.

Lyon, Edinburgh. Literature: A substantially similar demi-parure in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, is pictured in Jewellery in the Age of Queen Victoria, by Charlotte Gere and Judy Rudoe, p.17. The image of the demi-parure is accompanied by an image of a lithograph of a young Queen Victoria wearing a substantially similar demi-parure. Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: Queen Victoria, whom the artistic record shows owned a substantially similar demi-paure, was deeply interested in couture and jewelry. Often, she chose to wear jewelry by British makers, in many cases work that was historically inspired and/or sentimental, knowing that her choices were closely observed by the public. These jewels were often relatively modest in value, and accessible to aspiring women of the British middle class. Blood-red cabochon-cut gems have been known throughout history as "carbuncles", and their use in gold jewelry was highly popular in the sentimental, symbolism-loving Victorian period in England. In the 19th century, the new study of of archaeology had revealed that the garnet was a favorite precious stone of the Hellenistic Greeks, who centered carbuncles in wedding jewelry such as gold bracelets and garment appliqués fashioned...
