About the Item

Il pendente, inoltre, è pubblicato in: Geoffrey C. Munn, Le bijoutiers Castellani et Giuliano Retour à l'antique au XIX siècle, 1983. This splendid pendant was made in the second half of the 19th century by Carlo Giuliano, in 18k yellow gold with, in the centre, a slightly faceted oval Siberian amethyst of approximately 110 carats. The amethyst, therefore, is enclosed within a gold frame with blue, turquoise, white, black, opaque green and translucent red enamels which create a precious contrast with the 5 pearls, the 5 rubies and the 4 natural sapphires that are set in it. Carlo Giuliano was an important jeweller of the 19th century who, after starting his career in Naples working for Castellani, moved to London where he worked for the most important English jewellers, such as Robert Phillips and Hancocks & Co., spreading the taste for the neo-archaeological style that had already spread to Italy thanks to the fervour for the archaeological discoveries of Herculaneum and Pompeii. The pendant, moreover, is published in: Geoffrey C. Munn, Le bijoutiers Castellani et Giuliano Retour à l'antique au XIX siècle, 1983. Carlo Giuliano was an Italian goldsmith. Born in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and precisely in Naples in 1831, after starting to work in the goldsmith's shop of Alessandro Castellani he moved to London where he worked for the main London jewelers such as Robert Phillips and Hancocks & Co. At that time, the archaeological excavations in Greece and Egypt brought, among the aristocracy and the bourgeoisie, the fashion of classical and Renaissance motifs in clothing and jewellery. From this was born a passion for the spectacular neo-classical jewels, created by Giuliano, which made him famous.
