About the Item

This large, beautiful and lustrous baroque Tahitian black pearl can be worn so that the smoothest expanse of its surface faces outward. Nice! OR, you can show off the other side, featuring an endearingly expressive collection of bumps and lumps. It's like a nacreous Rorschach test: we can see anything from Edward G. Robinson chomping on a cigar to a pudgy dinosaur head to a catcher's mitt to a dog resting its head on its paws! If you're not in the habit of thinking of pearls as adorable, this one that may change your mind. We bought this little sweetie specifically because we liked the wrinkles, but also we like the fact that it does have enough smooth, nearly flawless surface area to do double time as a more conventionally beautiful pendant. This pearl was purchased from our trusted dealer, George Hajjar of Seven Seas Pearls in downtown Los Angeles. Rest assured that it is a genuine cultured Tahitian saltwater pearl. Not dyed. Not freshwater. All gorgeous. The cap and oversized top ring were made by Eytan Brandes in rich 18 karat yellow gold that he went over with a drill to create a distinctive "crunchy" texture. We paired the pendant with an 18" strand of natural black spinel beads mixed with an interesting array of silver, dark blue and gray iolites. The beads are all faceted and roughly 3mm. The closure is a 14 karat gold spherical box clasp that Eytan clobbered a bit in honor of the wrinkly pearl.
