Vintage Carved Buddha Pendant Talisman in Decorative 24K Frame
About the Item
Offered is a particularly beautiful pendant featuring a carved stone Buddha under glass, within a decorative high karat gold frame. The research I have done tells me that this amulet or reliquary is based on a Sukhothai period Buddha. (please note that the chain shown in the last photo is not included and is used as an example of how the pendant would look on a beautiful gold chain.)
I believe it to depict a walking Buddha based on the feet's position, in the Abhaya Mudra, or fear dispelling gesture.
Measuring approximately 1 7/8 x just under 3/4 of an inch (47.2 x 17.5 mm) not including the gold loop and jump ring, the pendant has an elegantly decorated gold frame that tests around 24K gold. The shape hugs the contour of the carved stone Buddha inside. The stone is of a grey color with perhaps a little silvering remaining inside, along with a bit of debris and dust. The reverse of the pendant is also carved, though I am not certain what the symbols/lettering mean. (with the loop and jump ring the total drop length is just over 2 1/8 inches or 55 mm.)
Overall, the pendant is in good vintage condition, with light wear to the surface of the glazing, the sides of the setting and the above-mentioned dust/debris inside. The carving itself appears to also be in good condition. Under magnification it looks like the Buddha's nose is flattened or worn, but I don't know if that is damage or was intentional. Otherwise, the carving is quite crisp and pleasing.
I don't know if this is an older carving, or vintage based on an antique Buddha. I think it likely to be the latter - either way it's very beautiful and the high karat gold setting elevates it still further. This is quite special and perfect for someone who practices Yoga or Buddhism.
