About the Item
This Berca box is made of lacquered wood using the ancient Urushi technique and is embellished with 925‰ silver and 18kt gold elements set with natural amethysts (4,60 kt), natural peridots (11,90 kt), and blue sapphires (0,80 Kt).
The opening knob is made of Madagascar red jasper with a brilliant-cut blue sapphire set inside, and the entire thing rests on a hand-enameled silver disc using the guilloche technique.
The box rests on four sphere-cut white chalcedony stones.
The inside of the box is lined with hand-sewn natural suede.
This is an extremely elegant and precious ornament in perfect Art Deco style.
Urushi is one of Japan's oldest and most prized traditional art forms.
In the Land of the Rising Sun, the term urushi is used to refer to the lacquer extracted from the urushi plant, which grows only in Japan and some areas of Southeast Asia.
Traditionally, the Japanese word is thought to derive from uruwashi (beautiful, pleasing) and uruosu (wet and luxurious). Urushi, in fact, is a lacquer commonly prized for the brilliance, elegance, and shine it imparts to the objects it coats.
Prized since ancient times for its adhesive and preservative properties, urushi was initially used for weapons of war and hunting. The first lacquered objects, such as combs and trays, were discovered 5,500 years ago in Japan, in the Shimahama Tomb in Fukui Prefecture. Later, this type of lacquer began to be appreciated for other characteristics, such as the fact that treated objects could be used for aesthetic purposes, while also being more robust and waterproof.
Although wood is the most commonly used material as a base for lacquered objects, metal, ceramic, and certain types of fabric are also suitable for this purpose.
BERCA
A FAMILY STORY, THE STORY OF A JEWELLER
In 1927 Giovanni Battista Berca started creating so beautiful and so refined jewelry that his fame surpassed that of any other master goldsmith.
In a short space of time he became the personal jeweler of influential families who turned to him for their small masterpieces in the tradition of classical high jewelry. Giuseppe Berca, his son, refused to rest on his father’s laurels and decided that the tradition should be updated.
He transformed his workshop into a small company and put emphasis on design development creating his personal style. Following his father’s philosophy is now Marco Giovanni Berca running the company: aesthetic searches coupled with unusual choices in the material selection are the hinges that hold up his ongoing research. “Attention should be placed on the item from which our activity stems: the research and the selection of those gems that may naturally appear mysterious and strange and that, in the hands of the jeweler, transform themselves so to appear almost magical, thanks to their capacity of light, color and joy: that’s why behind each collection lies a stone: we are fascinated by a unique material, its light, its color, the luminous spark that can materialize in front of our gaze; all items that, in themselves, constitute a beginning, the beginning of a new research of forms and volumes fit to give expression to our idea of “bello” –he says.
