Line Vautrin Box

About the Item

Portman Gallery is pleased to offer a Line Vautrin compact/poudrier in bronze. At first I thought that the lack of gilt must have been some kind of mistake, but this is actually a rare example of a box made by Line Vautrin that was never gilded. Signed legibly, and in very good to excellent condition, this poudrier box is documented in the text “Line Vautrin: Sculptor, Jeweler, Magician” by the artist and Patrick Mauries on p. 100 as part of the collection of Pierre Le Tan. Decoration: The overall effect is of a STUDDED object, with small triangles, moons and stars in a pattern. Condition: This poudrier has never held powder. Apart from age related wear (slight) to the edges of the inner mirror, and minor surface scratching to same, this work is in excellent condition. It contains its original unused powder filter and, underneath, a small piece of paper from the Line Vautrin workshop.
