About the Item
French Second-Empire artist Albert Ernest Carrier-Belleuse is known as the most prolific sculptor of this period. His sculptures were displayed in the Tuileries, the Louvre and the Opera House of the Palais Garnier. Now you can own and display a piece of this art history in your own home or office. Carrier-Belleuse cast this late 19th century model of the seated thinker Virgil in the Greco-Roman style so popular during the Napoleon III period. It is cast in solid bronze and finished with an acid patina, creating a gentle contrast between the recessed areas and the highly burnished surface. The underside of the base is exposed with the remnants of a small piece of green felt on the edge of the center back. The front left corner of the base is signed “A. Carrier” in script. This gorgeous, classic bronze sculpture makes a lovely decorative addition to any environment.

Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse
Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse was a French sculptor. Carrier-Belleuse was born on 12th June 1824 at Anizy-le-Château, Aisne, France. He began his training as a goldsmith's apprentice. He was a student of David d'Angers and briefly studied at the École des Beaux-Arts. His career is distinguished by his versatility and his work outside France, in England between 1850–55 and in Brussels around 1871. His name is perhaps best known because Auguste Rodin worked as his assistant between 1864 and 1870. The two traveled to Brussels in 1871 and by some accounts, Rodin assisted Carrier-Belleuse's architectural sculpture for the Brussels Stock Exchange.

A patinated cast bronze statue of a classically draped Greek scholar sitting sideways on a Klismos chair with the trademark griphons as front leg supports, the subject holding a pen in his right hand and an open scroll on the other left signed "Moreau" inscribed on one side of the chair. There are no visible foundry marks.
Presumably the signature stands for Mathurin Moreau, a 19 Century French sculptor born 1822, and son of noted sculptor Jean Baptiste Moreau. In 1841, the 19 year old Mathirin entered the École des Beaux Arts in Paris and, the following year, won the Second Grand Prix de Rome with his sculpture Diodemus removing the Palladium.
