Carved Rose Quartz Monkey Figurine

About the Item

Miniature figures of animals made of semi-precious stones became very popular gifts in the period of the XIX-XX centuries. At the end of the 19th century, stone-carved animal figurines created by masters from the Fabergé workshop became particularly popular. These touching and often humorous figurines could convey their owners' character traits and appearance. They were sometimes used as part of decorative compositions and had practical purposes, such as paper holders. Fabergé's famous miniature figures, carved from semi-precious stones, were not always branded or signed, leading to many fakes and copies. However, a characteristic feature of Fabergé's work was a commitment to high-quality workmanship and the aesthetic perfection of animal figurines. Some of his pieces may have been inspired by Japanese art, especially in terms of the colors and animal figurines, which were reminiscent of Netsuke figurines, and this became particularly noticeable from the 1880s onwards. In terms of attribution, animal figurines can be divided into three categories: 1. Figurines with a gold or silver frame were usually branded and often signed by the master. These pieces can be unequivocally attributed to the Fabergé workshop. 2. Figurines with partially gold details, such as bird feet or beaks, which were also labeled by size. Most of these pieces were created by Master Henrik Wigström, the master craftsman from 1903 to 1918. 3. The unmarked or unsigned animal figurines made exclusively of semi-precious stones. Their attribution seems difficult due to the lack of signatures, but they are outstanding for their technical precision and detail. A magnifying glass must be used to distinguish the fine details of such miniature figurines. For example, the jade frogs and toads have a surface with an almost wet luster, and details such as paws and claws are carved with minute detail. The surface of the pieces is rounded and devoid of sharp corners, giving them a delicate and wax-like surface. This adorable monkey is a stunning embodiment of exquisite craftsmanship, meticulously carved from rose quartz and flawlessly polished a century ago. Its beauty is timeless! Measurement: 4 1/4 inches x 1 1/2 inches. The figurine will be shipped in a non-original box, as the original box of this adorable monkey is unfortunately lost.
