A White and Russet Jade Carving of a Boy Catching Crickets, Qing Dynasty

About the Item

Skillfully carved with Hetian Jade, this boy dressed in a long robe crouches on an elongated lotus leaf mounted by a cricket. He grasps a basket with his left hand while another cricket perches on his back. The jade is an even white color with russet veins and inclusions on the bottom. Qing Dynasty. Dimension: 4.9 x 5.7 x 9.1 cm. Weight: 164.6 g Footnotes 清 白玉帶皮童子戲蛐把件 The motif in jade of boys catching crickets with a basket is extremely rare, although boys and lotuses are more commonly seen. Carvings of boys and lotuses created the rebus for the blessing of continuously having sons, as lotus (lian 蓮) is a pun for 'continuous' (lian 連), while the boy implies the wish for a son. The addition of crickets, which the boy is humorously trying to catch with his basket in this piece, reflects not only the individual freedom of the master carver, but also the popular pastime of catching and keeping crickets as pets to either sing or fight. A related jade carving of boy and lotus in the Qianlong period is illustrated by S. Howard Hansford, Jade: Essence of Hills and Streams, London, 1969, p.162. The last referenced image depicts a Ming Dynasty cat on a leaf, showing both the front and back views. Image is sourced from the Palace Museum in Taipei. Provenance — purchased from a Bonham’s auction in London in May 2018 Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to the condition and must understand that any statement made by Luxury Jewelry & Jade Art is merely a subjective opinion.

This ram, with its limbs bent in a seated posture, has detailed curly horns and holds lingzhi branches in its mouth. The eyes and mouth are finely carved. The back and legs display russet coloring.
