About the Item

Dive into the Botaniqué Studios' “Flora, Fauna & Nationality” collection, an ode to the multifaceted natural habitat of Antigua and Barbuda and our national symbols, such as the Frigate Bird. The Frigate Birds, also called, Man-o-war by locales, because they rob other seabirds of their newly caught food. The Frigate is the national bird of Antigua and Barbuda. Barbuda boasts the largest Frigate breeding and nesting colony in the world. Large birds with forked tails, the Frigate soars with a wingspan from 7-8 ft. The Frigate can be a symbol of national pride or war. The choice is yours. These artistic expressions are botanical in nature and are unique to the twin-island Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda. This scenic space in the Caribbean sea is home to 100,000 persons and was initially inhabited by Amerindians. The island has a past binding its people to a history of enslavement. As exemplified by the Botaniqué line of products, traditional artisanship is one of the few remaining intangible cultural skills that keep the island’s heritage alive. This item is from our Sui Generis line. Sui Generis is a Latin-derived phrase meaning one of a kind, which summarizes the pieces of this collection. Every Sui Generis piece is unique and has a stock of one. If you purchase anything from this collection, you will be the only one to have it, as these items are rare patterns and do not restock. You may use ideas from any of these designs in the creation of a custom item (email to inquire), as with all our wares. Still, these specific pieces you must buy while you can before they’re gone forever.

Blood & Pride of Barbuda Bracelet, Handmade Caribbean Seed Ware
Located in Oxford, MD
The original variation of this design has been exclusively tailored for sale at The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History & Culture. This is variation #5 of our most popular bracelet design, in ode to Barbuda. This unique 8” x .5” bracelet is inspired by the flag of Antigua and Barbuda and the Pan-African Flag. The wild tamarind seeds dyed black represent the black in both flags symbolizing Black peoples. In contrast, the petal-floral patterns accentuated with the red of the jumbie bead seeds highlight the Blood shed for the sake of liberation and the blood that unites us all across the diaspora—perfectly closing with a wild tamarind and jumbie bead seed loop and button. It inspires all that wear this bracelet to embody its symbolism. The masterful handicraft of wild tamarind and jumbie bead seedwork is a dying art, with only five women left in the world to create it. Botaniqué Studios...
