About the Item

An Art Deco chloromelanite jade, gold and diamond vanity case and lipstick holder by Marchak, the rectangular chloromelanite jade, with curved cut corners and a rose cut diamonds set clasp and hinges, inside is a mirror to one side surrounded by an 18ct yellow gold border, opposite is an 18ct yellow gold powder compartment, with French control marks and signed J. Marchak, Paris, the vanity case is suspended from two white metal chains, each chain is set with two jade beads, and a chloromelanite jade lipstick holder with a diamond set ring through the middle and diamond set 'X' on each end. Joseph Abramovich Marchak was born in 1854, at the age of 14 he started as an apprentice at a jeweller’s atelier, and in 1878 he launched his own business. Today, jewellery historians state that the works by Marchak embodied the best features of the art of jewellery in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The items created were distinguished by their professionalism, artistic taste, originality, and superb workmanship. While the House of Marchak created an array of masterpieces, most of them did not survive the storm of revolutions, wars and historical cataclysms and were lost forever. Marchak was awarded a medal at the World's Fair in Chicago in 1893 and another at Antwerp in 1894. Within a little more than twenty years, the House of Marchak was a household name. The year 1913 marked the 300th anniversary of the Romanov Dynasty. To commemorate it the State commissioned special pieces by Marchak to be given to Tsar Nicolas II as gifts. The Marchak family relocated to Paris during the Russian Revolution, following Josephs death in 1918, Alexander, his youngest son, left the army and joined the family in Paris. After the War, 1920’s Paris was alive again. Designers, craftsmen and jewellers came back from the front. As soon as he arrived in Paris, Alexander Marchak sensed the approach of a new incredible era and rapidly opened a shop on the famous Rue de la Paix, at number 4, right next to Place Vendôme and the Hotel Ritz Paris. In 2000, one of the only heirs of Alexander Marchak to bear the Marchak name decided to revive the brand of his great-grandfather by creating a new collection. The collection has travelled around the world, in Saint Petersburg, Moscow, the United States, Japan and Australia.
