About the Item

Botaniqué allows the consumer to explore and celebrate African history, albeit under the jurisdiction of the diaspora. The painstaking process of creating these crafts represents the stamina of the people and the traditions who made the journey from the African Continent. This craft is of such value that its preservation and development should be an essential element of efforts to enliven African culture among the diaspora. This piece presented is only a snapshot of the broad range of custom-made products produced by the hands of master artisan Antiguan and Barbudan women who specialize in seedwork—created out of the wild tamarind and jumbie bead Seeds. Only 5 master artisans are left and are training the next generation of Antiguan and Barbudan craftspersons. They will continue the legacy of creating these beautiful complex patterns of wild tamarind and jumbie bead seeds sewn together to make spider web patterns for jewelry, fashion items, and household decor.

Blood & Pride of Barbuda Bracelet, Handmade Caribbean Seed Ware
Located in Oxford, MD
The original variation of this design has been exclusively tailored for sale at The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History & Culture. This is variation #5 of our most popular bracelet design, in ode to Barbuda. This unique 8” x .5” bracelet is inspired by the flag of Antigua and Barbuda and the Pan-African Flag. The wild tamarind seeds dyed black represent the black in both flags symbolizing Black peoples. In contrast, the petal-floral patterns accentuated with the red of the jumbie bead seeds highlight the Blood shed for the sake of liberation and the blood that unites us all across the diaspora—perfectly closing with a wild tamarind and jumbie bead seed loop and button. It inspires all that wear this bracelet to embody its symbolism. The masterful handicraft of wild tamarind and jumbie bead seedwork is a dying art, with only five women left in the world to create it. Botaniqué Studios...
