Vintage 18K Gold Carved Lapis Lazuli Ram Head Statement Ring

About the Item

With a definite nod to the ancient use of the Ram's head for adornment, this striking vintage carved Lapis Lazuli and 18K gold ring makes a big, beautiful statement when worn. Crafted of 18K yellow gold, the ring is set with a large and substantial carved Ram's Head of celestial blue Lapis Lazuli. Lapis is the perfect choice for this ancient inspired ring, as Lapis has been prized since antiquity for its amazing color. Pliny the elder referred to Lapis as "a fragment of the starry firmament" referring to the pyrite sparkling against the deep blue ground. This particular Ram's head ring reminds me of the ancient Egyptian Ram's head, as Khnum was one of the earliest-known Egyptian deities, considered the god of the source of the Nile. Set into a simple, open backed polished gold bezel, the Ram's head measures approximately a little over 1 inch long x 9/16 inches wide and 7/16 of an inch high. Including the gold bezel, the rise off the finger is approximately 5/8 of an inch - this is a dramatic piece when worn. With a strong, simple design, the carving remains in very good condition, as does the lapis itself. It has the rich, classic blue Lapis is prized for, and lots of sparkly pyrite which adds to the ancient and powerful feel of the piece. (please note that your screen might display the color a little differently than mine does) The round profile band measures approximately 2 mm in width and remains in very good condition. Inside it's marked for 18K gold and with a maker’s mark of “D excl.” The finished weight of the ring is 15.24 grams. Fitting around a size 8.5 (it measures as a size 8 on my mandrel but fits more generously due to the band style), the ring can be sized up or down within reason by a good jeweler.
