18K Gold Diamond Star Signet Ring with Engraved Shoulders, hallmarked 1929

About the Item

This beautiful, vintage - nearly antique - diamond star band combines three of my favorite jewelry elements: 18K gold, antique diamonds and hand engraving. Crafted of solid 18K gold with a beautiful, rich color, the ring features a twinkling old mine cut diamond set to the center of a star on its face, with lovely hand engraved scrolling foliate shoulders. It's very much in the style of a signet ring but also works well as a stacking band or wedding ring, retaining full English hallmarks inside for 1929. (though it has a distinctly Victorian era vibe) Measuring just over 2 mm in diameter, the small, chunky antique diamond with open culet is estimated to weigh approximately .04 carats, or so. With good color and clarity, it has lots of sparkle and is original to the ring. I see no nicks, chips or scratches - it remains in very good condition. The ring came to me with the diamond a little loose in its setting, so I have had it tightened. A linear and scalloped border decorates the edges of the face, showing some wear, and there is some superficial scratching to the gold of the face, as well. (which could be buffed/polished, if desired) The shoulders are just as beautiful and charming as the diamond star, with a slightly rustic leafy scrolling design - still nice and crisp. The rest of the ring has a polished finish that shows some expected superficial wear, that again, you could choose to polish up if you prefer. Quite substantial on the hand, the face of the ring measures approximately 15 x 9.42 mm including the very upper shoulders, and has a modest rise off the finger of approximately 2 mm - making it comfortable and easy to wear. The shoulders taper from approximately 9.33mm at their widest to approximately 5.73 mm at the narrowest point - the very back of the band. With no signs of having been sized in the past, the band remains quite sturdy and the hallmarks are all intact. There is a worn maker's mark of "WW Ld." as well as marks for 18K gold, the London assay office and the date letter "o" for 1929. On my scale, the finished weight of the ring is a substantial 7.93 grams. Currently fitting a size 9 or perhaps a hair larger, the ring may be sized up or down within reason by a good jeweler. Depending on the size you wish, your bench jeweler may recommend adding more gold at the back to keep the sturdiness of the ring.
