Antique French Emerald Anchor Ring with Rock Crystal & Inscription

About the Item

Offered is a very special and unique Victorian period gold ring featuring a Rock Crystal plaque inset with an Anchor design studded with old emeralds. (Please note that one emerald is currently missing as shown in my macro photos. I have arranged for that stone and one other previously replaced stone to be replaced with custom cut emeralds. If you would prefer to receive the ring in its current "as found" state please let me know. If the work has not yet been done I am happy to oblige.) Inside the ring is a wonderful hand engraved inscription in French that reads: "pourvoiera Dieu" which translates to (Hope - which the anchor symbolizes) "Will provide for God." Each shoulder has a beautiful acanthus leaf design which was used often during the period to symbolize long life, immortality and rebirth. Perhaps this ring belonged to a sea captain. A beautifully detailed border decorates the setting that holds the rock crystal. The border/setting shows a little wear here and there but is overall still crisp and lovely. The rock crystal has very good clarity and light wear including some nibbles at its edges. Twelve of thirteen emeralds of varying hues are set into the gold anchor. Most have a square to rectangular step cut, but they do vary. I believe some have been replaced over time and most do show expected wear with abrasions and chips seen under magnification. While they could all be replaced with custom cut emeralds for a more even, vivid appearance, I personally love how much character these assorted old stones have. Testing around 18K gold or slightly under for me, the gold has a rich hue, especially around the border where it retains some of the original bloomed finish. In good condition, the band shows signs of having been sized down at some time in the past, so it has a bit of an oval shape. No hallmarks remain which is in keeping with the ring being French, as the marks would have been on the outside back of the band and would have been removed with sizing. Happily, the original hand engraved inscription was done to either side of the face of the ring inside, so was not affected by the sizing. While it fits smaller on a sizing mandrel due to the style and past sizing, it fits me slightly over a size 7 currently, and can be sized up or down within reason by a good jeweler. On my scale, the finished weight is 3.43 grams. (I have set the shipping date at 10 days to account for the emeralds being replaced, but this time frame might change.
