Essex Crystal Running Dog Hound Ring in 18K & 14K Gold - Antique Conversion #2

About the Item

Originally part of a pair of fine Victorian 18K gold European cufflinks, this sweet running hound dog 'Essex Crystal' has been converted into a charming ring. His brother has also been converted and will be available shortly in a separate listing (This listing is for the dog with the raised head, running to the left.) Set in its original 18K closed back setting, the reverse carved and painted Essex Crystal dog (a fox hound or other type of hound, I believe) is beautifully done and includes lovely foliage including a tree. What particularly struck me is the unusual use of metallic gold paint that adds a rather magical and autumnal quality to the greenery. (the metallic quality doesn't really show in my photos, unfortunately) The detail is very nice - down to the dog's paws and open mouth with tongue. Measuring approximately 16.4 x 12.07 mm (a little over 5/8 of an inch x a little under 1/2 an inch), the Essex Crystal remains in very good condition, with only some discoloration to the sky, and perhaps some lightening to the grass in the foreground. The painting of the dashing dog remains in very fine condition, as does the gold bezel. The lightly domed surface of the rock crystal shows only light wear. The reverse of the mounting retains its original mark of "18" for 18K gold; a small area at the back center (hidden when worn) no longer retains the bloomed surface, as that is where the chain link was removed. An elegant but sturdy split shank band in 14K gold was chosen to convert the piece to a ring. Including the shoulders, the face of the ring measures approximately 20.7 x 12.07 mm, with the rise off the finger at the highest point 6.1 mm. On my scale, the finished weight of the ring is 4.53 grams. A bit smaller on my mandrel due to the style of the band and construction, the ring fits me around a size 8 and may be sized within reason by a good jeweler. (the brother dog ring is a smaller size) - Please Note: it is best to avoid getting your Essex Crystal Piece wet, as eventually moisture can affect/discolor the painting.
