Antique Iberian (Spain) Colombian Emerald & Diamond Earrings late 18th Century
Located in OVIEDO, AS
Dazzling pair of museum quality chandelier earrings (collector's item), with electric foiled Emeralds. Inlaid with rose-cut and table-cut diamonds. Superbly preserved, dating from the late 18th century (1780). A set of sparkling flat rose-cut diamonds decorates each earring along with sixteen vibrant step-cut green emeralds. They range in value from 0.15ct (6 emeralds) to 1.20ct (8 emeralds), and total approximately 10ct in both. The galleries have ornate detailing and are fitted with three droppers at the bottom with a hinge in the center to allow them to swing and dance freely. The earrings preserve its original clip hooks and are divided into three bodies, the upper one can be separated and worn independently. Size: Height 80mm (78mm inc. hooks) x Width 23mm x Depth 5.5mm. Metal: Silver/ 18ct Gold (Tested) Stones: Emeralds (Major 6.46mmx 5.38mm, approx. 1.20ct each - 10 carats total), Diamonds (approx. 4ct total). Weight: 43.21g Modern Spain, Portugal and parts of France were once part of the Iberian peninsula- Please note that the earrings are in original condition with the original fittings. Sometimes these earrings are referred as Catalan as they were mainly made in the region at the late 18 cent. Spanish jewellery benefited from the Colombian emerald mines abundant supply by the end of the 18 century. During the eighteenth century, Spain controlled the gold and emerald mines of Colombia and Peru. This wealth of resources resulted in exquisitely fine gem-set gold jewelry. Parures of emeralds, necklaces, stomachers, rings, earrings, etc. were plentiful at the court of Spain. A long gold earring...

Spanish Colonial 1785 Dangle Earrings 17kt Gold Silver with Diamonds and Emerald
Located in Miami, FL
Spanish Colonial antique dangle Iberian earrings. Exceptionally rare antique pair created in Spain during the Spanish Colonial period, circa 1785. We are sure these dangle drop earrings were made in the Spanish Colombia and most probably in the city of Cartagena de Indias, back in the late 18th century. They was carefully crafted in solid yellow gold of 17 karats and parts in silver. These earrings are convertible for day and night, since the drop parts can be detached to wear the upper parts alone. The chandelier earrings have several moving links and are of a long length, which makes them rare and give them a very stunning look when worn. They are fitted with reverse lever wires and embellished with a nice selection of natural diamonds and emeralds, from Colombia. It should be noted that the diamonds and emeralds mount in this rare piece are definitely of Colombian origin. Seeing a piece from this period with this quality is very rare and difficult. Usually these pieces with that kind of precious stones were disassembled during the later Victorian period to create new pieces. This is a great collectible piece of great rarity, with an excellent craftsmanship and surely a collector's item. Diamonds: Mounted in custom prongs settings, with 4 old lasque-cut diamonds, 0.42 carats. Emeralds: Mount in boxes, with 10 natural Colombian Green emeralds of different shapes and cuts with a combined weight of about 2.80 carats. Birthstone: Diamonds for the month of December, Emeralds for May. Weight: 31.70 Grams, (20.32 Dwt). Measurements: Drop of 75 mm and a width of 21 mm with a deep of 10 mm 14 mm (2.95 x 0.83 x 0.39 Inches). Hallmarks: Electronically tested for .707/.999 equivalent to 17 karats gold and .850/.999 silver. Stamped with the maker's mark cartouche. Spanish Colonial Jewelry Traditional Spanish emerald...

Royal Siam 'Thai' Museum-Grade 18th Century Ayutthaya Ceremonial Ring
Located in London, GB
This incredibly ornate piece was made in Siam during the late Ayutthaya or early Rattanakosin Kingdom period. It dates to the late 18th and is a very rare example of a ceremonial ‘mondop’ or ‘pagoda’ ring. These rings were made for the monarchy and aristocratic class of Siam to be worn as part of the lavish adornment paraphernalia used in ceremonies. These elaborate rings were subsequently given as gifts to important visitors or other aristocratic families. A similar example is found in Musée National du Château de Fontainebleau and was originally presented to Napoléon-III by the ambassadors of King Mongkut of Siam (Rama IV) alongside hundreds of other lavish gifts in order to re-establish diplomatic relations between France and Siam in 1861. Among these gifts are old jewels from King Mongkut’s treasury, including the gold diamond mondop/pagoda ring (see photos). During this visit, the son of the Siamese ambassador, Khoumsombat, is photographed wearing a very similar tiered mondop ring with what also appears to be a ruby cabochon at the top (see photos). A ‘mondop’ is the tiered roof of a temple, for example that of Wat Phra Kaew in Bangkok, and is designed to be in the shape of the image of Buddha. The top tier of this ring features a bezel set star ruby cabochon while the rest of the bezel is covered with diamonds. The two outermost tiers rotate and are connected to the main body of the ring with a bifurcated rivet visible on the closed-back underside of the bezel, typical ornamentation of 18th century layered cluster rings. The arched shoulders are equally as ornate with bezel set rub over diamonds, emeralds and rubies appearing between foliate motifs and protruding serpent-esque decoration. The underside and outershank display bright red and green floral enamelling often seen on naga rings...

Rare Antique Late 18th Century Emerald and Diamond Ring This outstanding 18K gold ring dates to the late 18th century, circa 1780 and was made in Western Europe. A table cut natural emerald, likely to be of Columbian origin, is mounted in a gold rub-over setting and displays a gorgeous bright green hue. It is surrounded in all the cardinal directions by rose cut diamonds in closed-back rubover silver settings. The triangular facets of rose cuts were very popular during the Georgian period as they glistened more beautifully in candlelight than any other cut. The intricate openwork bezel is attached to ornate shoulders which lead to a rococo scrolled pierced shank, typical ornamentation of the 18th century. The ring is in great condition despite being over 200 years old. It carries a variety of Swedish hallmarks from when it was later brought into the country and subsequently stamped upon entry. Antique and Vintage Emerald Jewelry and Watches

No one liked emeralds and emerald jewelry more than Elizabeth Taylor (or her alter ego, Cleopatra). Emeralds were first discovered in Egypt around 330 BC. The stone’s name originated from the ancient Greek word for green, “smaragdus.” According to the Gemological Institute of America, “Emeralds from what is now Colombia were part of the plunder when 16th-century Spanish explorers invaded the New World. The Incas had already been using emeralds in their jewelry and religious ceremonies for 500 years. The Spaniards, who treasured gold and silver far more than gems, traded emeralds for precious metals. Their trades opened the eyes of European and Asian royalty to emerald’s majesty.”

There are numerous myths attributed to the emerald’s spiritual powers, like placing an emerald under your tongue will allow you to see the future. But be careful not to swallow the birthstone for May, or that future won’t be so bright!

There are many important (read: large) emeralds in museum collections around the world. The Patricia Emerald, named after the miner’s daughter, is a 632-carat dihexagonal (or 12-sided) crystal that was discovered in Colombia in 1920 and now resides at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. The Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington has in its possession the Hooker Emerald, a 75.47-carat Colombian stone. That emerald had been acquired in the 16th or 17th century by Spanish conquistadores and shipped to Europe. It later belonged to Abdul Hamid II, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire (1876–1909), who wore it on his belt buckle. Purchased at auction by Tiffany & Co. in 1911, the Hooker Emerald was set into a tiara and featured in the New York World’s Fair “House of Jewels” exhibit in 1940. Today, it is part of a brooch, also designed by the jewelry house.

On 1stDibs, find a range of antique and vintage emerald jewelry and watches that includes emerald rings, emerald necklaces and other accessories.
