An exceptional architectural high relief hand carved stone band of running scroll decoration frieze panel, with beautiful scrollwork, representing wind or water, and mythological creature, perhaps a dragon or grotesque griffin. The characters in the center may be Asian hieroglyphs (Japanese kanji). The top side has a dovetail joinery cutout from where it would have attached and fit into place before cementing it in place. 19th century or earlier.

This grand panel room is from a late 1800s prominent New York City building done in Italian Renassance, Beaux Arts style. Stanford White was among the architects that designed this building when he worked alongside Charles McKim in the influential architect firm ‘McKim, Mead and White’.
The paneling is solid quartersawn oak with classical details that has been kept in astoundingly good condition.
The lot consists of one and one half rooms. The main room is 403 inches x 290.5 inches. The overall height of the paneling including the baseboard and crown molding is 134 inches. The large arched details which mimic the arched windows on the opposite wall extend 48.5 inches above the crown molding.
