With artful and sensuous handling of material, Emile Jacob demonstrates his life-long love of learning with a technical mastery of porcelain and glazes as well as an awareness of current artistic trends such as Japonisme and l’Art Nouveau. From a bird’s-eye view perspective popularized by Japanese wood block prints circulating in Europe, Jacob immediately confronts the viewer with the sea. The variegated blues and greens take on every murky depth, every iridescence produced on a sun-filled water’s surface; while the suggestion of movement created by undulating patterns of water morphs into sand ridges caused by breaking waves as the viewer nears for a closer examination. The effect is remarkable. Upon closer scrutiny, the abstracted ridges create an affect of being even farther away from the sea, as if high in flight. The same captivating qualities are achieved by the opaque and crystalline glazes to suggest the interior of an oyster’s shell. The ultimate pearl, a female nude, is voluptuously modeled; fusing as one with her seascape, her hair spreads out in wavy tendrils and her graceful, long fingers wrap around the plaque’s edge. A carved wooden cubist sculpture of a seated nude woman by Boris Blai (1893-1985). This carving likely dates to the 1920s-1930s (during Blai's time in Philadelphia). Most likely constructed of sections of laminated basswood stained with a dark stain, it has an integral plinth with button feet and a carved signature the base. The sharp angular lines of the body are starkly contrasted by the soft-edged, almost nondescript depiction of the head and face. Blai was born in Russia and studied in academies in St. Petersburg, Paris, and eventually under Auguste Rodin. This is a welded steel sculpture made by furniture creator Jim Rose. It is sustainable design created from salvaged and recycled steel panels left over from his larger projects. These sculptures reference traditional American Folk Art barn house models or bird houses. This sculpture works alone on a shelf or table or can be grouped with other house sculptures by the artist. Each house sculpture is unique in design and color. After over two decades of dedicated work, he has mastered the minimalism of the Shaker technique and created his own unique visual vernacular. The quilts of Gee's Bend have become a monumental influence taking this artist's work to new levels of unique interpretation and artistry. His selection of aged steel results in a patina directly related to that of aged wood while his colored strips beautifully mimic worn cloth. Each piece of furniture is masterfully made and intended for daily use. Jim Rose’s steel furniture is featured every year at SOFA Chicago for the past 25 years. This is a white glazed and black clay raku fired ceramic bust. Though modern, this sculpture references Classical Greek and Roman antiquities. A subtle red glaze is used on the lips and the artist has purposefully and mysteriously left a portion around the neck between the head and the chest free of glaze, exposing the black clay beneath. Our magnificent bronze, entitled Der Gladiator, depicting a Roman gladiator preparing to fight was modeled by the German artist, Heinrich Baucke (1875-1915). Mounted to a green variegated marble plinth measuring 23 by 15 inches and with an overall height of 39 inches. Signed on the base with the stamped mark of the foundry, DUSSELDORFER BRONCEGIESSEREI G.m.b.H. The artist enjoyed a prestigious career.  According to the Benezit, Baucke studied under Karl Janssen at the Dusseldorf Academy of Fine Arts.  In 1903 Baucke moved to Berlin and executed several commissions for Kaiser Wilhelm II including a major work at the Royal Palace in Berlin (known since the end of the monarchy in 1918 as the Berlin Palace) and supervision of the development of the Schlossplatz palace square.  Commissions included the Monument to William I at Rotthausen, the bronze of King Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia at the town hall in Elberfeld, a statue of King Frederick I, a stone statue of Maurice of Nassau and marble busts of Helmuth von Moltke, Chief of the German General Staff, and German Chancellor, Otto von Bismarck...
