Young girl reading
Located in BELEYMAS, FR
Alice BASTIDE (Saint Mandé 1868 – Paris 1959) Portrait of a little girl reading Oil on canvas H. 100 cm; L. 72.5 cm Signed lower right and dated 1912 Daughter of a pastor from Gard and an English woman, Alice Bastide grew up in Paris. A pupil of the Jullian Academy, she began her apprenticeship under the guidance of Henri Royer and François Schommer. The development of his art is mainly oriented towards still lifes, without completely abandoning portraits and landscapes. Her other specialty for which she received numerous awards is miniatures. At the Salon of 1914 she received the Maxime David prize crowning the best piece while her finesse was already noticed by press critics from 1907. Coronation, in 1926 she received a gold medal at the Salon for her miniature Coquetterie. In 1896, the young woman married a man from Gard, Auguste Massebiaux, whose name she would occasionally bear. The latter, a lawyer at the Paris Court of Appeal, died in 1910. The couple had no children. At that time she was domiciled at 48 avenue d'Orléans (later named avenue du general Leclerc) in Paris where she lived until her death in 1959. Until the mid-1930s she continued to exhibit at the Salon des Artistes French with a manner very close to Impressionism, luminous and vigorous. In 1912, two years after the death of her husband, Alice Bastide was certainly still marked by the sadness of her mourning. The tones of our portrait of a little girl and the frame she puts together are dark and heavy. This child, wearing an embroidered bonnet, is bent over her book, her loose hair flowing over a red velvet indoor dress. This intimate portrait on a dark tapestry...

Garçon avec des Fruit - Boy with Fruit - Oil on Canvas - Naive Painting
By Nino Giuffrida
Located in Meinisberg, CH
Nino Giuffrida (Sicilian, 1924, active in France) Un Garçon avec des Fruits • Oil on canvas, ca. 41 x 33 cm • Frame, made by the renowned framer Knöll from Zürich, ca. 54 x 46 cm • Signed top left Born in 1924 in Sicily, Nino already attended the artistic high school in Catania at the age of 17, where he befriended fellow painters including Pippo Aleo and Giovanni Calogero. At that time, he painted with passion everything he saw, landscapes, seascapes, still lifes. After a first attempt to come to France with his friend Giovanni in 1948, aborted for lack of a visa. Nino finally arrived at the Gare de Lyon on December 8, 1949 and settled at number 30 rue Gabrielle in Montmartre. Nino began to paint Paris. Like many Montmartre artists of this period, while he painted all day long, he moved about in the evening on the terraces of the cafés of Montmartre and Saint-Germain-des-Prés to transform himself into a portrait painter and randomly sketch the customers in restaurants. Nino then devoted himself more and more to the painting of children, which became his favorite theme of inspiration. Pierre Imbourg, journalist and art critic, wrote of him: "Montmartre, the land of little ‘Poulbots’, inspiring Nino to record in his mind all these childrens faces whose intense facial expression he would endevour to reproduce". It was also at this time that his career as a Montmartre painter influenced by cubism began. With the disappearance of the art galleries in Montmartre, Nino decides to settle on the French Riviera, in Cannes then in Vallauris. From 1952 his personal exhibitions follow one another and Nino becomes an international painter: Rome, Brussels, Chicago, Copenhagen, Helsingborg and Aüs in Sweden, in Geneva, in Kourou in Guyana... In Paris, he manages the Galerie de la Colonne...

Shepard Fairey Bob Marley Works On Wood "Slave Driver" Contemporary Art
By Shepard Fairey
Located in Draper, UT
"I bought Bob Marley's Rastaman Vibrations shortly after I started skateboarding in 1984, purely because the only good skateboard ramp where I lived was called "The Rasta Ramp." I had mostly been listening to punk rock, but I was excited to discover reggae, which even more boldly embodied many of the same elements of social protest as punk but in a way that was much more palatable to my parents. I think my parents bought me Bob Marley and the Wailers records for every Christmas or birthday until I had accumulated their entire catalog; my very conservative grandmother even bought me a Bob Marley shirt from Jamaica. I leaned more towards punk, but some punk bands, most notably Bad Brains...

Class Photo Series #153
By Marshall Crossman
Located in Park City, UT
In the summer of 1983, I attended my husband’s 20th high school reunion. I was intrigued by the exaggerated poses, hairdos, and draped shoulders of the women in the 1963 year book. The photos told such a story of the people and the time, both individually and collectively. This reunion inspired my Class Photo Series...
