Living Legacies
When we were approached to outfit this charming Victorian, our new clients were expecting their first baby boy, and dreamed of having a completed nursery by the time he was born. We rose to the challenge and, against all odds, their dream came true.
Creating a family’s first home is a special and personal assignment that we don’t take lightly. We set off to create a space for the family to grow, gather and entertain — a space that would honor and celebrate family heirlooms, and leave room for new collections and memories.
Our design process started as most of them do, with art and research. Incorporating materials and design details from the era when the house was built, we added much more color, texture and character than our clients ever imagined. Layering historical tile and wallcoverings with new and vintage furniture, family treasures, custom hardware, new and inherited artworks and family photos created a warm and timeless hideaway for this young family to call home.
We approached this project with the goal of preserving the Victorian architecture and embracing the history of the home while holding space for a modern family. By focusing our research and restoration on decoration, rather than a more aggressive remodel, we were able to uncover and preserve important aspects of San Francisco's history that are regularly destroyed in this process.
