About the Item

Andrei Petrov's Fashionably Late is 9 x 13.5 inches watercolor on paper. The main colors are green, and purple. As it is often the case in Petrov's work, his abstractions acquire, at times, a more precise figurative accent, with references to nature. For this work the green and beautiful purple hues bring back an imagery of leafs and flowers, yet never clearly distinguishable. Sharp lines of more graphic signs create an interesting contrast with the fluidity of the watercolor. Andrei Petrov is an American Artist of Russian origins. His paintings are the expression of his lifelong struggle to retain memories of his childhood and life. He writes: "In my approach two roads are taken: a natural, Hudson River School path of light and drama filled grandeur that encounters energetic animated gestures, muscular surfaces, and bold strokes familiar in Abstract Expressionism.Beneath numerous glazes and opalescent layers swaths of paint dash about this stage and often emerge from the lower depths of which there are many levels. Freezing the action allows a probing slow-motion breakdown of the components that comprise the canvas. Think of a frozen lake: leaves, twigs, nuts, fish are all suspended in ice at different depths and angles. Piercing the surface, thick islets of paint interrupt a placid color field and create vast non-linear perspective from the root to the fruit of the gesture. Tension is created by the juxtaposition of animated bursts of paint with the slow contemplative layering found in paintings of the Hudson River School. The invitation to explore this amber-like world is now extended. Sometimes the brush is mightier than the pen."

Artist Comments
Purple and green are two of my favorite colors and wisteria is the perfect subject! I squirted paint directly onto the paper to make a lovely, saturated wash. When dry I developed the piece intuitively. I finished with tinted gouache to highlight the lovely light behind the wisteria. I'm very pleased with the mood of this piece.

About the Artist
Melissa is passionate about color. She finds it to be the most significant form of inspiration to paint. Speaking on influences in her work, Melissa says, “Sometimes it’s an idea that I can’t get out of my head, or a color that I just MUST paint!” She particularly enjoys painting leaves, and the changing colors of Oregon foliage are visible in her work. In 2001, Melissa began teaching art classes, which has allowed her to view her own artwork in a new way. “The information that flows in a class is awesome,” she says. Melissa is constantly learning from the students in her classes, and is more conscious of what it means to be an artistic role model.
