About the Item

Location: 211 Showroom Abstract With Yellow, 1987, by Norman Bluhm (1921-1999) Watercolor on paper 22 ¼ x 30 inches unframed (56.515 x 76.2 cm) 23 ¾ x 31 ½ inches framed (60.325 x 80.01 cm) Signed and dated on bottom center Description: Norman Bluhm was a second-generation Abstract Expressionist who also came to be considered an action painter. He studied at the Armour Institute of Technology in Illinois, the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze in Florence, and the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Bluhm, along with his contemporaries Sam Francis and Joan Mitchell, explored large-scale canvases as places to perform and produce movement. Bluhm's practice often incorporated elements of art history, combining figural and non-mimetic representation to create works that straddled the line between narrative and abstract. Bluhm often used the human figure in his artwork, which can be seen in the watercolor painting "Abstract With Yellow." While the painting is severely abstracted, the viewer can still make out torsos, backs, and even faces amidst the chaos of color. The composition of the piece is split into four panels, which are filled with abstracted nude forms. While these bodies are maintained, the expressionist elements of the piece cannot be ignored, with paint strokes being hyper-visible and even the process of the paint dripping down the canvas being permanently secured and dried to the paper's surface. Such an interest in representation amidst expression is unique to Bluhm during this era of increased abstraction.
