Zao Wou-Ki
Untitled

1995

About the Item

A magnificent work in Indian ink and "levi" ink, counter glued on strong paper and accompanied by a certificate from the Zao Wou-Ki Foundation. Zao Wou-Ki was born in Beijing on 1 February 1920. A few months later, his family moved to Shanghai. The T'chao family belonged to the ancient Song dynasty (10th-13th centuries AD). T'chao Wou-Ki - Wou-Ki being his first name - chose the pseudonym Zao Wou-Ki on his arrival in France. In 1967, he took part in the French Pavilion at the International Exhibition in Montreal, Canada. He then crossed North America before staying in Mexico with the painter Rufino Tamayo and his wife Olga, whom he had met in 1950. As part of the Salzburg Music Festival, Zao Wou-Ki directed the summer seminar created by the painter Oskar Kokoschka. Zao Wou-Ki also took part in numerous group exhibitions: ‘Peinture non figurative de la seconde école de Paris’, 1946-1962. ‘101 Masterpieces from the Gandur Foundation for Art’ at the Musée Rath in Geneva and “Abstraction picturale, 1949-1969: Selected works from the Guggenheim collections” at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. The exhibition ‘Chinese Artists in Paris, 1920-1958. From Lin Fengmian to Zao Wou-Ki’ at the Musée Cernuschi in Paris traces Zao Wou-Ki's beginnings in Paris, in the context of twentieth-century exchanges between France and China. Zao Wou-Ki liked to say, ‘I like people to walk through my paintings as I walk through them myself when I make them’. Commander of the National Order of Merit and Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour, Zao Wou-Ki was admitted to the Académie française in 2002. localized works : Piazza (1950), hst[78], 146 × 97 cm, preserved at the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris[46] and Centre national d'art et de culture Georges-Pompidou, Paris Entrance to the Fort (1953), hst, 130 × 162 cm Herbert F.
