About the Item

Signed Pencil Drawing by Andreas Geist, a German painter of animals and theatre sceneries. Andreas Geist was born as the son of the painter Joseph Geist, who moved from Würzburg to Haßfurt. His cousins were the painter Peter Geist and the watchmaker and inventor Sebastian Geist. In 1828 he married Augusta Laura Spies, the daughter of a paint manufacturer. August Christian Geist was born of this short marriage. Augusta Laura died of tuberculosis already in 1837. In 1818 he came to Würzburg and completed an apprenticeship as a painter under August Chr. Spies, after which he received basic training as a landscape and portrait painter under Peter Joseph Nolden. In addition, he attended the school of the "Gesellschaft zur Vervollkommnung der mechanischen Künste" (Society for the Perfection of Mechanical Arts) of the later Polytechnische Zentralverein. In 1825 Andreas Geist got a job as a painter at the Würzburg theatre. Andreas Geist further developed his artistic skills on several trips to Basel (1833/34) and Munich (1838/40). In 1840 he settled permanently in Würzburg and became curator of the Würzburg Art Society, inspector of the Municipal Painting Collection and teacher at the school of the Polytechnic Central Society, thus exerting a determining influence on Würzburg's artistic life. In addition to his work as a theatre painter, he also created paintings with Würzburg motifs. The present drawing might be for a theatre scene as it shows palmtrees and flamingos. However, one can not exclude that the painter travelled south and drew this scene from life. The drawing is signed (left).

Flamingos
By William R. Leigh
Located in Missouri, MO
Flamingos By William Robinson Leigh (1866-1955) Signed Lower Left Unframed: 12" x 10" Framed: 21" x 17.5" Born near Falling Waters, West Virginia on a plantation a year after the Civil War, and raised in Baltimore, William Leigh became one of the foremost painters of the American West with a career of seventy-five years. Some people referred to him as the "Sagebrush Rembrandt". He was the son of impoverished Southern aristocrats and took his first art training at age 14 from Hugh Newell (1830-1915) at the Maryland Institute where he was regarded as one of the best students in his class. From 1883 to 1895, he studied in Europe, mainly at the Royal Academy in Munich with Ludwig Loefftz. From 1891 to 1896, he painted six cycloramas or murals in the round, a giant German panorama. In 1896, he began working as a magazine illustrator in New York City for Scribner's and Collier's Weekly Magazine, and he also painted portraits, landscapes, and genre scenes. However, he was not a very successful artist in those years in New York. Trips to the Southwest began in 1906 when he made an agreement with William Simpson, Santa Fe Railway advertising manager, to paint the Grand Canyon in exchange for free transportation West. In 1907, he completed his Grand Canyon painting...
