About the Item

This 27" x 19" monochromatic graphite and charcoal drawing by Serbian artist, Bojan, is rendered in a hyper-realistic manner. A dog is the main subject in the lower right corner facing the left, with his leg lifted against the stone wall, presumably urinating with the word “FREEDOM” scrawled on the wall in large, uppercase, red letters. The choice of red for this inscription adds a layer of emphasis and draws the viewer’s attention, while the urinating dog creates an allegory that represents the ignorance and unawareness of the current social and political climates. Above and to the left of this inscription, the wall features a closed window with dark shutters, positioned within an arched stone alcove, adding a sense of depth and realism to the scene. To the right of the window, is a much smaller, rectangular niche within the wall that holds a depiction of a soldier or figure upon a horse, an element that encourages the recognition of history and antiquity. Below the window, next to the dog but positioned in the bottom left corner, a small vent is visible within the stone wall, further enhancing the detailed nature of the drawing. The combination of these elements creates a thought-provoking piece while highlighting the juxtaposition of freedom and ignorance. Bojan Grozdanovic Grof is a self-taught artist currently based in Zaječar, Serbia. He was born in Niš, Serbia in 1973 where he grew up with an interest in art and the world around him. When he was 18 years old, he witnessed the division of his country by civil war, which would later affect his art. At the age of 20, he went to Germany and gained his first international experience, doing mostly commissioned work. He believes that art, in any form, is closely related to every aspect of today’s social lifestyle. Bojan Grozdanovic Grof critically examines, through his art, the cultural conditions of today's society. Part of his artistic creation refers to the social perception of the rejected and forgotten, the right to freedom, poverty, war and to everything that corrodes a society. He is an advocate for raising awareness of all human impact on animals and wildlife and often finds inspiration in everyday objects that surround us. Although he likes to express himself through painting, for a long time now, his main focus has been on drawing. Using charcoal and graphite, through the strong contrast of black and white, he tries to emphasize that we live in dramatic times and that we need empathy now more than ever! His original drawings and paintings are included in private collections in Italy, Germany, Austria, France, Serbia, Israel, Montenegro and The United States.

'Seated Female Nude, ' by Paul Wingo, Charcoal/Conte Drawing
Located in Oklahoma City, OK
This beautiful framed black and white large scale study of a young female model seated looking away from the viewer, 'Seated Female Nude' captures and embraces the human form. Wingo approaches the nude figure with energetic line and play of light and shadow in a monochromatic palette. " I have been an Artist for many years. I received my Masters in Fine Art from Wichita State University, in Wichita, Kansas. I have taught art for many years. My work is intentionally loose in rendering, the purpose is to engage the memory of the viewer. I believe that the Artist should lead the viewer to make conclusions of their own. At a distance I have been told that my work appears photographic, yet, upon closer examination the viewer is often surprised to find how much detail their minds-eye has added to the image. I currently reside in Norwalk, Connecticut." -- Paul Wingo

"Faith, " Charcoal on Paper, 2023
By Bruno Surdo
Located in Chicago, IL
Chicago-based fine art painter Bruno A. Surdo is classically trained in drawing and oil painting in the tradition of Renaissance masters. With strong command of the human form, Surdo creates dynamic compositions of people and places that communicate a rich commentary on the world around him. Depicting trees from personal encounters, Surdo’s latest body of work entitled “Tree Spirits” takes us on a foray into the forest, where leaves, branches and burls express something deeply personal. Applying his mastery of figurative realism to the natural world, he experiments with form and texture to uncover the intangible spirits of trees. Entitled “Faith,” this small-scale charcoal drawing depicts a tree trunk carved with two deep cuts in the shape of a cross. The carving has healed over, assimilated into the bark as just another interesting detail. Up close, the work is loosely drawn with a heavy hand, but from afar, the natural scene still achieves a sense of realism. The tree trunk is conveyed through chaotic scribbling and aggressive strokes of light and dark charcoal, resulting in a pattern that simulates the rough texture of bark. Light falls softly on the tree, illuminating its form against the dark, atmospheric surroundings. The striking imagery of this work conveys the strong emotional response elicited by Surdo’s personal encounter with this tree. Restricting the composition to only the scarred portion of the tree trunk, Surdo focuses on symbolism of the cross carved into the tree’s side. The carving was inflicted upon the tree by an individual, whether as an act of graffiti or the object of adoration. Despite this wound, the tree persists and grows, adapting and changing until the mark is but another interesting detail. The tree’s spirit endures and speaks to the strength it takes to heal oneself, whether physically or mentally. Charcoal on paper...
