This collection of drawings is part of our exhibition Charles Goeller: A Wistful Loneliness. 1. Paradise Lost (But His Doom) Crayon on paper, 17 ½ x 12 ½ inches (image), 22 x 15 inches (sheet), Signed lower right, inscribed in the artist’s hand on a tab attached to the sheet: “But his doom/ Reserv’d him to more wrath; for now the thought/Both of lost happiness and lasting pain/ Torments him; round he throws his baleful eyes/ That witness’d huge affliction and dismay/ Mixt with obdurate pride and steadfast hate” (John Milton, Paradise Lost, Book 1) 2. Paradise Lost (The Flying Fiend) Crayon on paper, 17 ½ x 12 ½ inches (image), 22 x 15 inches (sheet), Signed lower right, inscribed in the artist’s hand on a tab attached to the sheet: “As when farr off at Seas a Fleet discri’d/ Hang in the Clouds, by Aequinoctial Winds/ Close sailing from Bengala, or the Iles/ Of Temate and Tidore, whence Merchants bring/ Their spicie Drugs: they on the trading Flood/ Through the wide Etheopian to the Cape/ Ply stemming nightly toward the Pol.
