About the Item

Provenance: Illustration House, New York, Framed in a simple and modest frame. This is a brilliant post-Cubist work by Dutch-American illustrator Charles Verschuuren (1891–1955) had a long career. Starting out as a teenage cartoonist for local papers in Tilburg, Netherlands, Verschuuren trained in Amsterdam and Paris before creating hundreds of posters, fliers, and advertisements for large firms such as the printer Drukkerij Kotting (the works in this post come from this time). He moved to Cleveland in 1922 and then to New York, where he would illustrate 380 covers for the Brooklyn Eagle, design posters for the WPA,

As art historian and writer Suzanne Ramljak wrote "the ambivalent relationship between humanity and machinery has informed Aptekar's art from the start and remains a central theme in his work. Like many of the issues Aptekar addresses, technology is not without contradiction."
