About the Item

The subject illustrated here is one of the moments that mark the centuries-long history of Genoa's glorious Maritime Republic, when the ashes of St. John the Baptist, one of the city's protectors, enter the city. The time of the First Crusade (1098) marks the discovery of the sacred ashes of the Baptist in Asia in the city of Mira. Their translation took place in a solemn manner when they were placed in the cathedral of St. Lawrence. [...] In the Treasury Museum, located in the crypt, is preserved the famous Ark of the Baptist that we see, simplified but evidently evoked, in the center of Gandolfi's composition. The ark, whose shape echoes that of a miniature cathedral, was commissioned by the priors of the Chapel of the Baptist and made between 1438 and 1445 by the Ligurian Teramo Danieli [...] Other symbolic monuments of Genoa's Middle Ages are present in Gandolfi's composition, juxtaposed with each other for evocative purposes and without a real correspondence to their location. Well-recognizable is the Embriaci tower that still towers in the urban area of the castrum, the oldest in Genoa and still called the Castello tower. The presence of this precise tower is anything but coincidental, since it was William Embriaco, victorious in the First Crusade, who brought the ashes of the Baptist to Genoa [...] the ogive arch of the city gate echoes that of the main gate of the 1155 walls, known as "del Barbarossa," namely Porta Soprana, which is still very well preserved today.
