About the Item

Beautifully executed oil pastel on archival paper by the renowned American artist Louis Kronberg. Signed lower left with the artist’s trademark Star of David symbol after his signature. Condition is excellent. Circa 1945. Titled verso with multiple gallery and artist labels verso. Framed in a modern gold ornate frame in an antique style. Overall framed measurements are 31 by 23 inches. Under glass. Provenance: A private Manhattan, New York collection. Louis Kronberg (1872 - 1965) Born in Boston in 1872, Louis Kronberg displayed artistic talent at an early age. As a young adult, Kronberg attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, where he was influenced by his instructors, Edmund C. Tarbell and Frank Weston Benson. From that school, he received the Longfellow Traveling Scholarship, enabling him to attend the Académie Julian in Paris, under Jean-Paul Laurens and Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant. In France, Kronberg encountered the works of Edgar Degas, who became a major influence for Kronberg, who is often referred to as “The American Degas”. Upon returning to America, Kronberg was featured in exhibitions organized by the Boston Art Club, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the National Academy of Design. He also participated in several Paris Salons during his stay in Europe. By the turn of the century, Kronberg’s artwork featured subjects from the theater, especially dancers. He received a silver medal at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco in 1915. In 1921, he moved to New York and became active in the Salmagundi Club. During this time, he had solo shows in New York, Boston, and Chicago and, in 1937, he received a Medal of Honor at the Paris International Exhibition for his painting, “The End of the Ballet”. He was also made a chevalier of the French Légion d’Honneur. Besides the theater and ballet, Kronberg also loved to paint Spanish dancers Source: AshleyJohn Gallery

“The Ballet Performance”
By Jean-Louis-Marcel Cosson
Located in Southampton, NY
Exquisite, original oil on canvas painting of a ballet performance by the well known French artist, Jean-Louis-Marcel Cosson. Signed by the artist lower left. Condition is very good. Old wax reline. Solid mahogany wood frame with gold decoration. Overall framed measurements are 24.75 by 33.25 inches. Jean-Louis-Marcel Cosson was born in 1878 in Bordeaux. His first exhibition was in Paris at the Salon des Artistes Français, of which he would later become a member. He received an honourable mention at the age of 23 in 1901, and a third-place medal in 1911. He also exhibited at the Société des Beaux Arts and the Salon des Tuileries. Cosson is a post-impressionist artist who developed a very distinctive style which makes him immediately recognisable among his peers. His passion was to capture a bustling Paris which was the epicentre of the Modern art world at the beginning of the twentieth century. Fascinated by Edgar Degas, he almost invariably followed the themes beloved by the Impressionist Master, such as Parisian women or horse racing. But like for Degas, his most admired works remain his paintings of...
