About the Item
Entitled "Drawing for The Sponsor," this work by Chicago-based artist Patrick Fitzgerald envisions an advertisement by Southport Tool and Die, a Chicago company from the 1940s and the imaginary sponsor to his soap box car "Maquette." Drawn to seem improvisational, "as having been removed from a work space and placed immediately into a frame," the sketch enriches the car's fictional history and tells the story of a forgotten company. At the bottom of the piece is a reference to the "MULberry" phone exchange, a recurring theme in several of Fitzgerald's works and a reflection on our ever-evolving technological landscape.
"The concept of these drawings," says Fitzgerald, "was to make objects that appear salvaged from a junk shop and rescued from oblivion. The frames are imperfect and show their age, each given one last chance to serve its purpose."
“Drawing for The Sponsor” is part of a body of work Fitzgerald calls his “Neighborhood of Infinity,” a borrowed term used literally to refer to the bounty of materials and creative inspiration he found in the industrial landscapes of his childhood in Grand Rapids, MI. Building from found materials collected over the years, he creates works layered with personal memories and keepsakes from the past.

The sculptures and paintings of Chicago-based artist Patrick Fitzgerald are about personal nostalgia, memory, and the beauty he finds in his urban environment. He refers to his body of work as his “Neighborhood of Infinity,” a borrowed term used literally to describe the bounty of materials and creative inspiration he found in the industrial landscapes of his youth. For the last decade, Fitzgerald has been mining his early experiences, re-envisioning the mechanical world of his childhood through the eye of an artist. Born from a fascination with the soap box derby cars of his youth, Fitzgerald constructs miniature soap box cars and the branded attire of their imagined drivers. He builds primarily with found materials - wood, wires, tubing, screen, fabric and collage. The real work involves the finishes: the hand lettering, stages of varying color paint coats, and surface treatments. He always leaves traces of changes or repairs made to a work, adding to the history and evolution of each piece. Futuristic forms imbued with history, each sculpture is an exercise in imagining the future through the lens of the past – or vice versa.
