About the Item

Rembrandt van Rijn 1606-1669 Dutch Old Man with Beard, Fur Cap and Velvet Cloak Second state of three Signed in monogram "RHL. F." (upper left) This masterful etching exemplifies the great Rembrandt's extraordinary virtuosity as a printmaker. Created around 1631, this compelling portrait demonstrates the artist's unparalleled ability to capture both physical presence and psychological depth. The work represents a quintessential example of a "tronie"—a Dutch term for character studies that focused on exotic costume and expressive features rather than formal portraiture. This genre, in which Rembrandt excelled, became among his most sought-after etchings. Rembrandt's technical mastery is evident in every element of this composition. The artist masterfully renders the varied textures of the subject's attire, from the soft folds and luxurious sheen of the heavy velvet cloak to the bulky fur cap that casts dramatic shadows across the sitter's weathered features. Through a sophisticated combination of fine parallel lines, cross-hatching and strategic highlights, Rembrandt creates a convincing sense of material weight and surface quality. During Rembrandt's lifetime, his prints were the primary vehicle for his international fame, traveling far beyond the Netherlands and reaching collectors across Europe. His innovative etching techniques and dramatic style elevated printmaking to an art form equal to painting in sophistication and emotional impact. His prints became highly popular on the art market and were widely collected and imitated, establishing Rembrandt as the preeminent printmaker of the Dutch Golden Age. His influence on subsequent generations of etchers remains profound, with his technical innovations and expressive approach continuing to inspire artists today. The son of a miller, Rembrandt van Rijn is believed to have been born in Leiden on July 15, 1606. He studied first at the Latin School and was then enrolled at the University of Leiden at the age of 14. He soon left to study art—first with a local master, Jacob van Swanenburch, and then, in Amsterdam, with Pieter Lastman, known for his historical paintings. Rembrandt was an exceptionally gifted student and mastered his art in a mere six months. At 22 years old, he returned to Leiden and was soon so highly regarded that he was able to take students of his own. Now considered one of the greatest artists of all time, almost every major institution has examples of his etchings. Additional etchings of this portrait reside in esteemed collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery of Art, the British Museum and more. Woman Bathing Her Feet in a Brook by Rembrandt van Rijn
By Rembrandt van Rijn

Rembrandt van Rijn 1606-1669 Dutch Woman Bathing Her Feet in a Brook Etching on paper New Hollstein's 309, second state of II Signed and dated "Rembrandt f. 1658" (upper left) Created from observations of a live model, this work started as a figure study before evolving into a more imaginative setting. It remains ambiguous whether the scene is set indoors, as suggested by the cushion the figure is seated on, or outdoors, indicated by the foliage in the background. The omission of her feet, suggesting they may be dangling in a brook, adds a charming touch to Rembrandt’s imaginative scene. The figure seems unaware of the viewer, presenting a dignified yet sensual demeanor. The son of a miller, Rembrandt van Rijn is believed to have been born in Leiden on July 15, 1606. Buste d'homme barbu by Pablo Picasso
By Pablo Picasso
Located in New Orleans, LA
Pablo Picasso 1881-1973 Spanish Buste d'homme barbu (Bust of a Bearded Man) Signed "Picasso" (upper right) and dated "8.4.65" (en verso) Oil on canvas Pablo Picasso and his work transcend art history: they have achieved global celebrity within both academic circles and popular culture. More than any other artist, his ever-evolving, evocative style has come to define modern art of the 20th century, and to this day he continues to gain recognition. The most compelling of his works offer a glimpse into the psyche of the master himself, and the present work can be counted among these. Combining saturated color with a jarring simplicity, Buste d'homme barbu represents an important series of bearded men portraits that the artist composed during the last few years of his life. These works are among the most highly personal and intimate of his career, and they serve as remarkable examples of his mature style with their highly modern expressivity. Many of Picasso's works from his last years capture the visage of his wife Jacqueline, who was his chief model during this period. In April, however, at his home studio in Mougins, France, Picasso changed direction and produced a series of individual portraits of men. His male subjects derive from various sources. Often they were self-referential portraits; often they referenced his father, Spanish painter José Ruiz...
