About the Item

Charcoal on paper drawing by Toronto-based artist Katherine Curci. Framed. Katherine Curci began this series of charcoal drawings, premiered in This Land., at the start of the pandemic. Working from photographs, both captured by the artist and drawn from outside sources, Curci has completed some 75 seascapes and landscapes. Each scene is fully realized and highly nuanced—rendered in such expert detail that her works can often be perceived as photographs. Featured imagery includes specific places throughout her home country of Canada, as well as in regions of South America and Europe. Carefully manipulating the pressure of the charcoal, Curci achieves all tones—from the deepest, velvety black to pure white highlights, while encompassing all tonalities in between. She captures sfumato cloud covers and misty seas, as well as highly detailed and densely populated tree stands.

The image measures 10 x 15 inches. 16.5 x 21.5 inches framed $1250 Artist statement: Nature provides the perfect model of beauty, according to Plato and Socrates. In the classical period, something was considered beautiful because it existed in nature; art was secondary. In the 18th Century, the German philosopher Johann Joachim Winckelmann argued against the idea that art imitates life, believing that qualities superior to nature are found in art, specifically, ideal beauty, and “brain-born images”. Neoclassical thought represented that art need not serve any end other than its own existence. For me, beauty is an ideal, nature is real, and art comes from the brain. I take pictures in nature, finding shifting, disparate, and beautiful landscapes. I develop my pictures of trees...

Twilight #19, Gathering - Silver Birch Tree - Black and White Landscape Print
Located in London, GB
A stand of spinous silver birch gather, shining white against the inky night... Over a three-year period, Goodall has visited areas of British forest and moorland to make images that he refers to as being 'more akin to fairytale than documentary'. There is indeed an unreal quality to the images, and this is perhaps a result of using artificial lighting; it reminds one of those spooky, unnaturally lit forests we see in the movies. In the absence of any natural illumination (save for a few that include the moon), scenes are lit as if they are in a studio setting. This results in imagery that feels eerily unfamiliar; transporting the viewer from the recognisable landscape into a kind of liminal netherworld - it's the landscape, but not as we are used to seeing it. Goodall responds to this observation by speaking about the possibility of the darkness being seen as a metaphor for the unconscious mind; the 'light' of consciousness illuminates the known forms of tree and rock, but beyond these certainties lies the unknown. When your eyes have little information, your imagination takes over and fills in the gaps." - Jasper Goodall...
