About the Item
This small drawing (pencil on paper, 25 x 19.5 cm) depicts a friar (who from the style of his tonsure and tunic would appear to be a Franciscan) on the left, seated in the act of reading. It is located in the open air, in the cloister of a church with typical Oltralpine Gothic features of which we recognize the Carolingian-derived westwerk terminating in tall pointed spires, ogival arches, and Corinthian-type capitals. There is an interesting difference between the totally finished parts of the building and others that look like ruins that nature is reclaiming.
The image seems to refer to Cologne Cathedral or Notre Dame de Jumièges Abbey, but it is likely to be a whim invented by the artist. The whole design is pervaded by the romantic temperament typical of the 19th century.
The drawing is signed in the lower left corner, inside the quadrature, in lane handwriting Luigia Orsi, an artist of whom there are currently no traces.
