A Fine, Mid-Century Modern 1950s Drawing of a Reclining African American Male Nude Model by Notable Chicago Artist, Harold Haydon (Am. 1909-1994). A well executed studio figure study drawing of a young Black man highlighting Haydon's refined skill and confident draftsmanship as an artist.

Artwork size: 9 1/2 x 12 inches (sheet), unframed, floated to a 12 x 16 inch archival mat board (ready to frame). Signed and dated "Harold Haydon 28-II-51" lower right. Estate stamped on reverse. Provenance: Estate of the artist.
Harold Emerson Haydon was born in 1909 in Fort William, Ontario, Canada. He moved to Chicago with his family in 1917 and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1941. Haydon attended the University of Chicago Lab School and the University of Chicago, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Philosophy. He also studied at the Art Institute of Chicago in the early 1930s. Haydon became a Professor of Art at the University of Chicago from 1944-1975 and later taught as an instructor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago from 1975-1981. From 1975-1982, Haydon also taught as an Adjunct Professor of Fine Arts at Indiana University. He is recognized for his vibrant, painterly landscapes of New England, Vermont and Canada, as well as his dynamic urban views of the city of Chicago and its picturesque lakefront.
Harold Haydon served as the longtime, respected art critic of the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper from 1963-1985. He died in Chicago in 1994.

Harold Haydon

He attended the University of Chicago Lab School and the University of Chicago, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Philosophy. He also studied painting at the Art Institute of Chicago. Haydon was a long-time Professor of Art at the University of Chicago, teaching from 1944-1975. He became an instructor at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1975-1981. Haydon also taught as an Adjunct Professor of Fine Arts at Indiana University from 1975-1982. In addition, Haydon served as the noted art critic of the Chicago Sun-Times from 1963-1985. He died in Chicago in 1994.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Robert Blackburn (1920 - 2003) participated in the rich mix of art programs and creative groups available in Harlem as he grew up, including Charles Alston's Harlem Arts Workshop, the Harlem YMCA, and later the Harlem Artist's Guild. In 1937 he joined the WPA at the Harlem Community Art Center, the largest New York center for instruction in the arts.
