It is known that Guirand de Scevola was very interested in the Palace of Versailles and its Old Regime atmosphere, that he often painted it and that he participated in the Versailles Revival movement at the beginning of the century. This probably led him to paint scenes in the 18th century style, for which he was particularly well known and which are still sought after.
What is striking is the modernity of the execution of our pastel, which obviously contrasts with its subject in the style of the 18th century. Guirand de Scevoal is a great colourist and he proves it here with eclat, by building up his composition with white pastel highlights, contrasting with brown and black. There is something of the northern painters in this treatment of light. All this, as always with him, is very subtle. The light radiating from the window is almost an abstract notation, but it gives meaning to this interior scene.

This unusually charming and well-preserved watercolour was painted by William Henry Hunt in around 1833. Almost certainly depicting his young wife, Sarah, possibly in the interior of her family home at Bramley in Hampshire. This work shows Hunt’s remarkable virtuosity as a watercolourist, Hunt, for example, articulates the profile of his young wife, by leaving a reserve of white paper to suggest the light modelling her features. Throughout the 1830s Hunt made a sequence of richly painted interior views of both domestic and agricultural spaces which pay scrupulous attention to detail.
Hunt was born in London, the son of a tin-plate worker and japanner. J. L. Roget recorded the observation of Hunt’s uncle: ‘nervy, little Billy Hunt… was always a poor cripple, and as he was fit for nothing, they made an artist of him.’ At the age of sixteen he was apprenticed to the landscape painter John Varley for seven years, moving to live with Varley at 18 Broad Street, Golden Square, London. There he made close friends with both John Linnell and William Mulready. Hunt worked at the ‘Monro Academy’, at 8 Adelphi Terrace, London, the house of Dr Thomas Monro, an enthusiastic patron of landscape watercolourists. Angular Times The next one in the Risque series. After my previous colored pencil drawing ‘Risque – 18-01-22 I wanted to experiment with angular structures again. The reason is that I already did one in my roundism style (Risque – 11-01-22). One could say I was looking for yet another challenge. In the description to aforementioned drawing I wrote about cross-overs between abstraction and realism. This time it was time to set loose this ambition of mine on straight-edges plains. See if I can get away with a realistic impression wrapped in abstraction than it lets on at first glance. Flash Lightning The reference picture is taken during the session of December 30th 2021. That was a great one and I directly fell in love with her chair and rugged blanket. Notwithstanding her roundness by definition Julia happened to took this position with her arms spread. Her left leg was placed in a spectacular angled position. The result was a flash lightning, running from her toes up her leg and spine, branching towards her arms. The tonal rhythym of light and dark plains did the rest. I could not think of a better model and a better position. The Cat Executing the drawing and almost finished I felt something was missing though. It seemed the left corner did look a bit empty. It needed an introductory detail. There simply was only one thing that came to mind, almost automatically: her cat. She happens to have a Scottish Fold...

In the "Guinness Book of Records" as one of the most reproduced artists in America, Jane Wooster Scott began copying work by folk artists such as Grandma Moses and gradually evolved into her own style. A turning point for her career was a joint showing at the Ankrum Gallery in Los Angeles with her comedian friend, Jonathan Winters. It was mostly a business crowd, and she sold 40 paintings in an hour.
Scott grew up in the Philadelphia area and moved West following her dream to be a movie star. She quickly learned that goal was not for her, but became the host of a talk show where she interviewed movie stars. Then she married and quit that work, becoming a full-time mother.

These recently discovered 1984 oversize works on mylar and archival papers were created with a live model.
