An educator, administrator, and social reformer, Anna J. Haywood Cooper was born a slave in Raleigh, North Carolina, and spent fourteen years fighting to gain access to Latin and Greek classes reserved for men at St. Augustine's Normal School and Collegiate Institute, from which she graduated in 1877. She married the Reverend A. C. Cooper at St. Augustine's, where each taught, but after his death in 1881, she began the second phase of her education at Oberlin. That year she joined Mary Eliza Church (Terrell) and Ida A. Gibbs Hunt in the "gentleman's"
collegiate course and graduated in 1884. One of the pioneer African-American women who earned a B.A., she returned to Oberlin for an M.A. in Mathematics, which she received in 1887.
Continuing her trailblazing for race and gender issues, Cooper wrote the feminist manifesto, A Voice from the South, spoke at feminist and educational conferences, and achieved many honors such as membership in the American Negro Academy. She was a leader in the National Association of Colored Women. Aligned with DuBois's philosophy, she spoke at the
1900 Pan African Conference in London, arguing for self-determination for African-Americans and an end to colonialism in Africa and apartheid in South Africa.
Anna Cooper received a Ph.D. at the Sorbonne in 1925 after a decade of study while she also maintained a full-time teaching load. Her thesis was on French policies during slavery. She had been shaping Frelinghuysen University in Washington, D.C., an interdenominational Bible college, and became its president in 1930, at the age of 72. She died in 1964 at the age of 105.
In preparation for this ongoing series the artist received images from Legacy Magazine’s photo archive of 19th Century women writers, understanding that she’d obtain permission from each source to use the photos in her artworks. Permissions were received and she began the series in 1992. The Harvard/Radcliffe Schlesinger library then offered Suzanne access to relevant microfiche images that were employed in subsequent works. In addition, the library exhibited the in 1992. The collector Vivien Leone purchased and donated one to the library, and the library subsequently purchased two more.

May Wilson (1905–1986) was an American artist and figure in the 1960s New York City avant-garde art world. A pioneer of the feminist and mail art movement, she is best known for her Surrealist junk assemblages and her "Ridiculous Portrait" photo collages.
Wilson was born in Baltimore, Maryland, into an underprivileged family. Her father died when she was young. She was reared by her Irish Catholic mother, who sewed piecework at home. Wilson left school after the ninth grade to become a stenographer/secretary to help support her family. When she turned 20, she married a young lawyer, William S. Wilson, Jr., and give birth to her first child. She continued to work until the birth of her second child, after which she devoted her energies primarily to mothering and homemaking. In 1942, the couple had prospered enough to move to Towson, Maryland, where she began to take correspondence courses in art and art history from several schools, including the University of Chicago. In 1948, after the marriage of their daughter, the couple moved to a gentleman's farm north of Towson, where she pursued painting and gave private art lessons to neighbors. She exhibited her paintings, scenes of everyday life painted in a flat, purposefully primitive manner in local galleries and restaurants. In 1952 and 1958, she won awards for work submitted to juried exhibitions at the Baltimore Museum of Art.
In 1956, her son, the writer Williams S. Wilson, gave to Ray Johnson, the founder of the New York Correspondence School, his mother's address. This began a friendship and artistic collaboration between Johnson and Wilson, which would last the remainder of her life. Wilson became an integral part of Johnson's mail art circle and was initiated into the New York avant-garde through letters and small works that she exchanged with Robert Watts, George Brecht, Ad Reinhardt, Leonard Cohen, Arman, and many others.
When her marriage dissolved, she moved to New York City in the spring of 1966, aged 61, taking up residence first in the Chelsea Hotel and then in a studio next door, where she threw legendary soirées and became known as the "Grandma Moses of the Underground". 'Persistence' is an original mixed media painting on rough-cut aluminum by American artist and appraiser Kelly Butenhoff. In the image, Butenhoff shows a yellow figure against a blue background; however, the painting is even more about the material of paint and metal than it is about figuration. Recalling the figurative paintings of Abstract Expressionist Willem de Kooning, the work is constructed of built-up textured layers, their rough surface mirrored by the irregular border of the aluminum sheet support.
These same colors are seen in the Ukrainian flag. Yellow and blue represent Ukraine’s wheat fields below the blue skies and mountains. All proceeds of this sale will be donated to help Ukrainian refugees.

After studying abroad, Kelly graduated from Carroll College, Waukesha, Wisconsin, with a BFA in Fine Art and Commercial Art. Her career in the art world began with the prestigious David Barnett Gallery in Wisconsin. Simultaneously exploring her own artistic accomplishments and gallery pursuits, eventually brought Kelly to Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, and Studio E Gallery in 2001 where she held the position of Gallery Director for eleven years while launching her endeavor of concierge fine art and appraisal services. Never one to rest on her laurels, Kelly appeased an interest in appraising by attending the School of Continuing and Professional Studies at NYU, completing the intensive Art Appraising and Connoisseurship Program in 2004. These studies and internships have included in-depth research and documentation of fine and decorative arts. Courses, workshops, and seminars on fine art, decorative art, American silver 1800-1940, estate jewelry, 18th, and 19th-century furniture, and IRS legal guidelines. This piece is made by layering Korean mulberry paper on a wooden panel with homemade flour glue. Then I apply a glue base. Next, I draw my sketch, and trace it on the paper. Then I paint three or four layers of a background color using pigments and glue base. Lastly, I paint the animal subject in fine detail, which takes most of time. The single animal represents loneliness. This piece is on a cradled wood panel with finished edges. It comes ready to hang.
About the Artist
Heejin has been been drawing for as long as she can remember. She grew up with a serious illness and spent much of her childhood in the hospital. Drawing served as an outlet for her, bringing her peace and distraction. Heejin says there was no doubt as she grew up that she wanted to be an artist. She studied oriental painting extensively as a college student in South Korea and then went on to study art therapy in graduate school.

Resin-based art has clean, sharp lines and a definitive shape. Resin is a liquid that hardens to a high-gloss surface and is used to seal wood, counters and floors. Resin can also seal artwork, and many artists tint it using pigment powder, ink, spray paint and other vivid materials. If water is added, the resin will turn milky instead of being completely transparent. It’s common for artists working in mixed media to use resin on nontraditional surfaces like glass, wood, metal and stone. This creates a shine that’s perfect to brighten a dull space in the home or office.
