Spin Art Butterfly with Gold Mirror Punk Me Tender #447 Round
Located in Greenwich, CT
Punk Me Tender (b. 1982) is a French street artist whose brightly colored work explores themes of love, beauty, sensuality, and desire. Born Romain Lefebvre in Paris, France, he immigrated to Los Angeles at the age of 18. There, he was introduced to street art by fellow artist, Mr. Brainwash. The pair worked together creating art for over 15 years. Today, Punk Me Tender’s work melds techniques of street art, graffiti, photography, and fashion. His bold three-dimensional mixed media creations often use a silhouette of a butterfly as his focal point amid explosions of color and texture. Spun art is one of the major techniques the artist employs in the work. On his work he explains “the technique I use is itself a transformation: I lay down colors over white butterflies, and watch them transform.” “The same way a butterfly is born, and how it transforms itself from a chrysalis– my whole body of work is based on that” Inspired by the anonymity of Mr. Brainwash and Banksy, Romain began to work under the pseudonym, Punk Me Tender, a name derived from his great love for the legendary singer Elvis Presley and electronic duo Daft Punk. He has held residencies at the SLS Hotel South Beach, Nobu, Astra, Club MIami, and the Kiss Kiss...

Circulo Grande - Original Ink on Paper Artwork with Black Figures and Gold Leaf
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Juana Céspedes specializes in original art that draws inspiration from the infectious exuberance of dance. Her captivating artwork features individuals gracefully suspended in ethereal white space, forming mesmerizing semi-abstract compositions of shapes, clusters, and lines. Drawing from her beloved hometown of Barcelona, Céspedes envisions the harmonious mingling of souls as city squares overflow with jubilant dancers rejoicing in the arrival of sun-drenched days. Through the medium of watercolor, the artist skillfully captures the fluidity of human movement, while her meticulously crafted handmade paper adds depth and evokes the essence of the urban landscapes that fuel Céspedes' creativity. This one-of-a-kind 12-inch square artwork is painted on handmade paper. It is unframed. Céspedes uses ink and gold leaf to display the splendor of movement. Convenient local Los Angeles delivery. Affordable Continental U.S. and worldwide shipping are also available. A certificate of authenticity issued by the art gallery is included with this original work. Provenance: Artplex Gallery The artist’s journey spans 21 years during which Céspedes has developed a unique style always revolving around two major themes: urban space and human bodies. “Dance inspires me. I love its contagious joy. I’m often carried away by the image of swing dancers on an endless journey, from partner to partner—a journey that started in Harlem and found its way across the world.” As a self-taught artist, Céspedes’ work is an inspiring example of outsider art. Her life is a story of resilience. The artist was orphaned at thirteen and Céspedes was left to contend with life as the eldest of a family of seven in rural Andalucía. Her pursuit of art brought a meditative calm to her life but with no connection to the art world, Céspedes did not show her work as she developed her unique style. Céspedes decided to infiltrate the artistic circle of Barcelona after years of solo creation. She joined the Agrupacion de Acuarelistas de Catalunya where masters helped her see the liberating power of abstract watercolor, with its ebbs and flows. Céspedes’ work has been shown in more than 60 solo and collective exhibitions and awarded internationally. Large Scale 1980s Laser Holography, Cvetkovich Organic Hologram Collage
By Tom Cvetkovich
Located in Surfside, FL
In this holographic collage the artist, and inventor Thomas Cvetkovich uses a method of recording an object image of a first hologram as a second hologram is provided. This holographic method is known as compact holographic human interface, and was invented by him. Reconstructed images of holograms, in this case a fish, a banyan leaf and flora and fauna abstract forms, generally become visible when illuminated by a source of light having an angle of reconstruction. Thse are created with laser and computer technology. An artile in Life magazine was all it took it took to influence Tom Cvetkovich's career path, one that has brought his Youngstown company, Chromagem, an international clientele. It focused on new technology that linked the use of lasers in producing holograms, three-dimensional and free-standing images. Reminiscing on Chromagem's past work, Cvetkovich said, One of the things we're most proud of is a series of U.S. postage stamps, achievement in space. We did three stamps for that. We've done postage stamps for Canada, the German government. We've also done work for Moet & Chandon, the champagne; Estee Lauder; and the cover of the 'Star Trek Generations' box set. Over the past two Christmases, Chromagem created a special variety of Reynolds Wrap that features snowflake holograms stamped on the entire roll. Cvetkovich created his first hologram when he was a student at Kent State University in 1974. He took science and art classes to gain the knowledge on how to make the creations running through his head and onto a sketchpad into a fully realized form. "I'm coming at it, primarily, from an art background, but with some science background." He continued his studies at Lake Forest College. It was the first place in the world to offer a workshop in holography. I was there for their third year. Combining art, science Next, he earned a master's degree from the Art Institute of Chicago. The Art Institute was just starting a holography lab. Actually, I had to build my own because theirs wasn't ready. When I was going to college, I would do a math class and then make art. I could tell I was using different parts of my brain. Over the years, Cvetkovich has developed a mental truce between the creative and scientific sides of his brain. At this point, it's more of a craft, he said. I don't rely on a lot of math or science at all. I try to keep abreast at what's being invented, what new...

Artist Comments
Artist Darlene McElroy demonstrates a portrait of a woman in elegant royal garments. "When you finally become comfortable in your own skin and feel complete, you have earned your wings," says Darlene. "There are no longer self-imposed restrictions on yourself." Darlene employs various materials to create dimension, texture, and multiple finishes for an engaging portrait.

About the Artist
Darlene McElroy sees creating art as similar to reading Turkish coffee grounds. A story becomes revealed as one looks at the surface, texture and color. Her works use a variety of materials ranging from acrylic paints to photo transfers and collage. She currently lives in New Mexico and has been greatly influenced by the work of Robert Rauschenberg. She encourages viewers to search for their narrative interpretation when viewing a work.

Sake of the Song
Located in Napa, CA
Robert Mars’ graphic compositions and rich colors provide an ideal medium in which to explore his fascination with the Golden Age of American popular culture and the icons of the 1950’s and 60’s. Drawing inspiration from the near-mythical fame that surrounded celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe or Audrey Hepburn before the instant and all-encompassing presence of the internet, Mars’ daring approach creates paintings with a nostalgic yet innovative vintage quality. Mars begins by defining borders and background planes of color with sheets of brown paper and then proceeds to layer paint and vintage paper ephemera. He selectively sands segments of the layers, allowing specific portions of the underpainting to shine through, creating the sensation that the viewer is getting glimpses through a window into the Golden Age of America. By incorporating actual pieces of print from the eras he so adores and sealing it all under shining, impenetrable resin, Mars’s artworks transform into physical remembrances of a period in America’s past so loved and idolized, yet will forever remain trapped in history. A graduate of Parsons School of Design in New York, his artwork was selected for the Absolut Vodka Blank campaign alongside Damien Hirst, and his largest sized piece to date was acquired by Philip Morris/Altria for their corporate headquarters in Virginia. In 2015 Mars was chosen for the cover of Neiman Marcus’ May Book, while CocaCola purchased several existing works and ordered commissions for a world tour celebrating the 100-year anniversary of their trademark bottle shape, in which his artwork was spotlighted. Mars is a featured artist for a custom high end wallpaper and tile series...

His education as an artist began in 1963 at Fullerton Community College where his interest in architectural drafting led him to develop a passion for drawing, painting, and printmaking. In 1966, he pursued his love for printmaking further at California State University, Long Beach under the former Tamarind Lithography Workshop printer, Robert Evermon. In 1969, Petersen went on to work as an assistant printer at Gemini G.E.L. where he printed editions for Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, and Robert Rauschenberg. Most notably, Petersen served as one of the head printers for Rauschenberg's Stoned Moon series, during which the two formed a close friendship. In late 1970, Rauschenberg invited Petersen to live and work with him on Captiva Island, Florida, which had recently become the artist's permanent residence and studio. In 1971, Rauschenberg and Petersen...

Mixed media is a type of art that sees artists using a range of materials or more than one medium. Find a range of mixed media paintings and other artworks for your space today on 1stDibs.

Mixed media is distinct from multimedia, which describes art involving electronic media, including video, computers and digital elements. Artists combine painting, drawing, photography and sculpture for mixed media art. Instead of sticking to one form, they aim to break boundaries and create unique pieces. Pop art is one of the vibrant periods for mixed media art, with Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg among its most fabled producers. Rauschenberg, like many mixed media artists, used found objects in his work, from cast-off furniture to newspapers.

Collage is one of the most well-known areas of mixed media. Artists use various types of paper, fabric, photographs and more to create one cohesive work. A type of collage is assemblage, which involves 3D objects.

While artists may use fabric in collage, it can be the very substance of the art itself. Fabric art makes extensive use of texture. Artists may paint or embroider on fabric to create layers of texture and color to evoke a specific feeling. They can also transfer photos onto fabric for innovative ways to display visuals.

Resin-based art has clean, sharp lines and a definitive shape. Resin is a liquid that hardens to a high-gloss surface and is used to seal wood, counters and floors. Resin can also seal artwork, and many artists tint it using pigment powder, ink, spray paint and other vivid materials. If water is added, the resin will turn milky instead of being completely transparent. It’s common for artists working in mixed media to use resin on nontraditional surfaces like glass, wood, metal and stone. This creates a shine that’s perfect to brighten a dull space in the home or office.
