About the Item

Artist Comments
"This painting has traveled with me through six moves and four cities," shares artist Agata Kijanka. "It's a very slowly transforming piece that evolved over twelve years. I added various textures using molding paste squeezed through fine metal sheeting, flower-shaped collage elements embedded in paint, scratches, and more. It wasn't until I started applying and removing oil and cold wax to what would eventually blossom into this colorful, uninhibited, and dramatic piece, that this painting started to quickly find its destined form."

About the Artist
Artist Agata Kijanka creates sensually textured abstract paintings. Working from visual and emotional memory and imagination, Agata builds each artwork in layers - applying paint with scrapers and brayers, transferring paint from other surfaces, and removing paint with solvent and blades. One of the defining moments for Agata as an artist was when she moved alone to Santa Fe from Seattle in 2008. As she explains, it was "a beautiful place that I love with its rich art related history, plentiful galleries, and inspiring landscapes. I anticipated staying for 6 months but I ended up staying for 4 years." She continued her artistic journey to Sedona, AZ and now lives in Albuquerque where she works from her home studio. Putting down roots in the southwest has influenced Agata's work, especially time in the desert, the sunshine and open skies. When she's not painting, Agata enjoys cooking, gardening in her desert yard, and talking endlessly to her rescue dog.

All Is Full of Love, Abstract Painting
By Maya Malioutina
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
Maya Malioutina's ongoing series "Lighter" is inspired by Rumi's quote: "The wound is where the light enters you." Maya explains, "Not just our wounds, all our cracks and scratches - the sum of our life experiences, are what makes each one of us unique, whole and beautiful and serve, simultaneously, as an entrance through which the light enters us and exits - through which we are able to shine the light that we carry inside us outward."

About the Artist
Maya’s abstract mixed-media artworks are inspired by urban imperfections–cracks in sidewalks, peeling paint, rusted metal. Influenced by the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, Maya embraces the aesthetic flaws of city life, translating daily discoveries into heavily layered and textured paintings. “Some works have close to fifty layers,” she mentions. “I like to layer paint and media slowly, a little at a time.” Maya employs a neutral palette and generous applications of metallic leaf to create meditative yet sumptuous artworks, quietly enticing the viewer.
