About the Item
In this new series Mercado utilizes canvas in big format as a medium to intervene Jack Delano's photographs of Puerto Rican agriculture workers he documented for the FSA in the 1940's. Originally, Mercado intervened Delano's photographs in a C-Print medium , For this new series The Canvas big format creates a new dialogue with the observer.
In this exhibit named “Iconos”, Carlos Mercado embarks on a road taken by famed photographer Jack Delano six decades ago. Through his lens, Delano aptly captured the essence of Puerto Rico in the 1940’s. Through all his work we see and feel the dreams, need and poverty. But he also captured the ingenuity, spirit, and dignity of his subjects in the face of despair. Delano’s images are forever entwined in our collective memory as people.
Mercado valiantly reembarks in the same journey using modern techniques, and adding new textures and exploring the dimensions of color with the subjects. He isolates them and deifies them using gold and silver leaf as it was done in Byzantium times. With this he plays with Delano’s subjects by turning into icons common people, laborers, farmers and such, instead of saints. An apparent irreverent play and fusion, of color and texture, but at the same time highlighting the dignity of its subjects.
By using bold colors neon and striking contrasts , Mercado makes the subject almost jump at us. The effect is bold but does not obliterate the subject. It reminds us what Warhol did in the 60’s in his now celebrated celebrity portraits.
With these “ New Iconos” Carlos Mercado, makes us rethink our values and makes us reminisce who we were, who we are, and, who we aspire to be.

Carlos Mercado Self-taught artist. Mercado has taken part in more than a dozen group and solo exhibitions in Puerto Rico and the United States since 1989. Considered a conceptual artist more than a painter and designer, he is influenced by Pop and Experimental art. His early works included impressions of his own body on cloth, which he achieved by drenching himself entirely in paint. He later worked with mixed media and collages and subsequently with abstraction. Within the Pop style, he has worked on portraits that capture the essence and feelings of the model.
Mercado is highly committed with his work. The fundamental aspects of this artist production are grounded in his dedication to the medium as well as his compromise with his point of view. The search for new ways of expression has leaded him to gradual changes in his point of view and stylistic modifications. In the last years he has explored big format art installations in open air spaces in Fuerte San Cristobal and Dorado Beach Ritz Reserve Puerto Rico in collaboration with Arte Fitts foundation . In may 2023 Mercado opened a Gallery space in Madrid in the prestigious zone Salesas, the new Soho of Madrid . Mercado is the cultural ambassador for the Tourism company of Puerto Rico , promoting cultural tourism and international exchange of artist from Puerto Rico and Spain . Carlos Mercado b.1958, Ponce, Puerto Rico

Artist Biography from the Artist: "I have made art for as long as I can remember. When I was in high school in Beaumont, Texas, I would draw constantly. During high school, I took classes in painting, drawing, and design at the Beaumont Art Studio, Beaumont Art League, and the Art Institute of Houston.
During the mid to late 1980s, I studied art, concentrating on design, drawing, sculpture, and painting at Lamar University and the MFAH Glassell School of Art on a scholarship. After leaving school I worked on the installation crew at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston. That was a great time, because I was working with some talented people who are still making art today – David McGee and Tierney Malone to name a couple. While I was there, I learned museum quality handling of art and installations.
I began making art with found materials while attending Lamar University, mostly wall-dependent works and collage from found wood, fabric, paper, and paint. I have always been a scavenger, partly because I never had much money and partly because it is a medium that I identify with. I continue working on assemblage and collage today, incorporating drawing, painting, printmaking, and traditional sculpture techniques into my pieces, often using objects that have a storied history to myself or others. I incorporate objects from others in my own work and for commissioned works of art.
I worked at Judy Youens Gallery from 1990-1993, doing whatever needed to be done. She specialized in glass, so I became an expert in handling fragile works of art, which included installing them, building custom crates, and preparing them for shipping. While at the gallery I was also on the Art League and Texas Accountants and Lawyers for the Arts boards. I designed, curated, and installed over 100 exhibitions though the 90s.
I studied with a master carpenter from 1994-1999 and learned how to use a variety of hand and power tools, sourcing material, building techniques, as well as repurposing and fixing just about anything. This has served me well. Combining my art and design skills with my new building skills, I designed dozens of home remodels from single rooms and outdoor deck tops and complete homes from the ground up. I still do design work and consultations.
I served on the Art League of Houston Board of Directors from 1991-1994, where I was president of the Artist Committee and a member of the Executive Committee. In 1997 I moved into an empty shell of a warehouse and immediately finished out the space with a large studio, kitchen, full bath, and bedroom loft. My Barnes Street Studio was next door to artist Harvey Bott...
