Joanne Ungar
"Frango Rasberry Chocolates" Abstract Cast Wax Wall Painting, in red and green

2022

About the Item

This poured wax painting by Joanne Ungar, is composed with the geometric forms of recycled packaging, layered and infused with pigmented wax. The pink, brown and green in this pigmented waxwork, by Joanne Ungar, has an iridescent quality in reddish undertone to this wall piece. Ungar's complex sense of color creates a beautifully balanced use of warm rose tones contrasted with blues and cooler colors. A vibrant sculptural painting, the smooth surface of the wax is built in layers, giving a nice depth to the work. Signed on reverse by the artist. Joanne Ungar’s background in collage arts transitioned into her current process works when she began working with wax in the 1990’s. Her luminous wax paintings are created with refined, purified beeswaxes and commercial grade paraffins with very high melting points, as well as encaustic pigments and encaustic medium, creating work that is archival and stable. Joanne Ungar is originally from Minneapolis. After studies at Oberlin College in Ohio she moved to New York City and earned a BFA from the School of Visual Arts. Joanne Ungar is a New York Foundation for the Arts NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship program Grant recipient. Ungar has exhibited extensively in New York and nationally. Ungar currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.ydreams mixed with reality, which she transforms into visual fairytales. Her works expand on her interest in life, the end of life and transitions. The narratives she creates are filled with strong memories and feelings; they are visual poems full of meaning.
